Description: The St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf is the birth place of the song, Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!, having been first sung in 1818. Written earlier in 1816 by the church sacristan, Joseph Mohr, music was later added by a local school teacher, Franz Xaver Gruber, in 1818. This infamous song, Silent Night has had the power to pause World Wars. The St. Nicholas Church was torn down in the early part of this century after church foundations had been weakened by the flooding of the nearby Salzach River. In its place is the Silent Night Memorial Chapel is erected.
