The first UK DVD to translate Pilates directly into the saddle! Equestrian Pilates with Gemma Tattersall is an innovative DVD aimed at the aspiring beginner to intermediate rider. Using a combination of riding demonstrations and specially designed pilates exercises it will help move the viewer to the next level in their riding discipline, across all disciplines be it dressage, show jumping or cross country. With the energy and riding talents of rising eventing star - Gemma Tattersall, along with the knowledge and focus of Pilates Instructor, Mary Thornton BSc (Hons) MCSP HPC, the viewer is taken, over a four month period on a fascinating equestrian journey. Initially Gemma assesses her four students in the ménage for their common rider faults. They then complete Mary's specifically designed regime of exercises on a weekly basis. Their journey is completed when they are back in the ménage with Gemma and we see the remarkable developments these exercises have made to their riding. More riders are becoming aware of the importance of fitness, suppleness and balance. British Equestrian Coaches are talking more about the importance of core stability, which can take riders to the next level of competition in any sphere of riding. There are numerous Pilates DVDs on the market but none that link riders common problems to specific Pilates exercises to benefit the rider!

Useful, but poorly executed DVD
This DVD is useful and I am glad I got it as an intro to Pilates and connected to riding keeps it interesting.I use it alongside RWYM (Mary Wanless) techniques and these exercises all definitely work to get the average person fitter, more supple and with a greater core strength, as well as re-training your mind-body communication. This in turn has helped my riding improve. The DVD execution is a bit amateur however, and not that easy to navigate. It was hard to find the final chapter where all the ladies have done the pilates training and show their improved ability compared to when they were first filmed. It is also long.

Good concept. Poorly executed.
I was really looking forward to getting cracking with this DVD and improving my position in the seat. I enjoyed the before and after demonstrations of positioning in the seat and common faults with the riders - especially as I tip forwards in the seat and I want to resolve this. However the production of the pilates section was poor. The lighting was bad and positioning of the cameras not thought out. Cameramen were frequently on view and the studio was a bad choice - you could hear seagulls and sirens throughout. Whilst the instruction was good, it was aimed at those in the class and did not translate well for viewers at home. I felt like a voyeur in someone else's class, rather than a participant, and wanted to switch it off. I would not have minded the quality being poor if the DVD been priced at £7.99, however, I expected more for £14.99. Whilst this DVD is interesting to examine positioning in the seat, I wouldn't watch it again...you can buy a good pilates DVD for a few quid on amazon and honestly, as pilates principles work on improving overall alignment no matter the sport, your seat would improve anyway as a result. If you have very specific issues, go and see a physiotherapist too.

Excellent
This is just like having a real Pilates session. There are two matwork sessions to choose from plus a session with an exercise ball and another for just stretches. I found this really helpful as the instructor reminds you to check your alignment throughout. I thoroughly recommend it. It's easy to follow and loads better than the Janice Dulak one which seems to have you developing power muscles in all the wrong places.
