Poignant and funny - read in one sitting
Sly, clever and fun, Coulson plays with the traditional objectification of women by telling the story of Kitty, a turn-of-the-century heiress trying to break out of the decorative role she was born into. But the true pleasure is in how Coulson manages to paint such a rich portrait with a minimum of words by using the style and format of the descriptive labels you would see on the wall of an art museum. So pay close attention because each word is a carefully chosen clue in rounding out the history of both a character and of the 20th century. I wanted to read it again as soon as I finished to see what hints I didn’t pick up on the first time. Brava!
