Would this backpack will protect the container inside (waterproof) in a heavy rain?

Yes it is waterproof!! I thought it was going to be that cheap plastic that easily tears but it is not. It's thick & durable sort of remind of tarp almost. My son have had his for 2 yrs now and still going

This bag is very stiff! Is there anyway to soften it?

Not really. I find after having it for a while it does soften up on its on.

Is this waterproof? As in will I be able to take it kayaking and the contents inside won’t get wet?

Yes, now to take kayaking it is hefty. I purshased for my teen who loves to mess up backpacks. Last year the backpack survived.
