Great Food History
I bought this book, because I am a Hawaii transplant on the mainland and wanted to start cooking more food from my childhood. The book had less recipes than I had been hoping for, but the plethora of food history makes this book to invaluable. I am happy that it has become part of my cookbook collection. It has so much history that I never knew growing up in Hawaii.

This a great review of restaurants over the decades in Hawaii, the culture, and how favorite dishes came into being.

A treasure worth having.
A treasure worth having. So many beautiful photographs and illustrations with stories of history. Many recipes that are so inexpensive and simple to make, and very delicious. Cucumber Bisque,.. the power to comfort. Historic photos, nostalgic menus and lavish food photography. I had no idea of the diverse culture in Hawaii until I read this book. More than 70 recipes from missionary deserts, to plantation comfort food, to regional cuisine. The book is out of print and scarce now, so if you can find one, even used, it would make a beautiful gift to give.

Easy reading.

I would not have ordered it.
The book itself was very well done. But upon reading the article in the newspaper I thought it was a recipe book of the days of the camps in old Hawaii. It wasn’t. VERY DISAPPOINTED! When ordering the book, I couldn’t find anywhere about the recipes nor that it was just a book of the old days.

comprehensive book on Hawaiian cuisine and history
Great hardcover book on Hawaiian soul food and its history and influences. It is not a "recipe" book but more of a history of Hawaii with all its eclectic cultural influences, but it does have some good classic Hawaiian recipes in it. The basic teriyaki sauce recipe on page 41 is great and adaptable for all kinds of dishes! Great illustrations!

Great book about Hawaii's food and culture
This book details the history and cultures of Hawaii. The foods the people brought with them and the foods that were created out of necessity. A great cultural history of Hawaii with recipes. Highly recommend for any foodie as well as anyone interested in the people of the Hawaiian Islands. Being a fan of Hawaii and of food, this was a perfect book for me.
