Fantastic Series
10 for 10! This is a great series which you don’t have to read in order to enjoy. However, I’ve enjoyed reading them in order to follow the continuity and character development. Each book is full of interesting characters and intriguing plots and it is fun to learn a bit about the various parts of the countryside that the books are set in. Well done!

Another real twister fro JR Ellis
I love Ellis's pictures of Yorkshire. His characters are well developed and have a great relationship. The plot has several twists and viable suspects. I never suspected the ending. Mr Ellis' writing gets stronger with every book and Yorkshire had become almost another character. I look forward to his next one.

A Real Delight
A good mystery with lots of suspects because everyone had reasons to dislike the victim. I just love how Mr. Ellis always finds points of interest in Yorkshire to make each book unique. I looked online at pictures of the canals, locks, and the mills. The historical information Mr. Ellis weaved into the story about the canals and the Salt mills made it so interesting,

Adequate mystery
I have read most, if not all, of the books in the series and the mysteries vary in quality. This book had a strange inclusion of folk songs listed as copyrighted by book characters-- not sure why. I enjoy most of the characters in this series, and I enjoyed the focus on narrow boats and canals. But I have to say that the plot in this particular novel seemed at times to be secondary to the promotion of the author's political agenda, although all books in the series would encourage us to be vegan, leftist, environmentalists, feminist, spiritual but not traditional Christian, and sexually active with a partner but never a spouse. The book was okay but I am a little tired of the author's soapbox.

Fun escapist reading
The Canal Murders is the 10th novel in the DCI Oldroyd Murder Mysteries series. I always enjoy the books, since they are very much escapist reading. As was the case with all of the previous novels by J. R. Ellis, there is enough character background to make each novel a stand alone mystery. The plotting works, although I very quickly figured out who, why, and how the first murder happened. And I foresaw the second murder right away, too. Ellis uses many of the same techniques as Agatha Christie, which for any murder mystery fan, makes it easy to predict where the plot is headed.I loved the setting on canals and the narrowboats. A friend bought a narrowboat and loved it. I always thought I would, also. Ellis does a very good job with landmarks and descriptions and the history of the area. As always, Ellis provides terrific epigraphs before each chapter. I always enjoy these. I enjoy catching up with Oldroyd, Steph, and Andy. It often feels as if they continue their lives between each book. The dialogue sometimes feels awkward and the flow of the writing is artificial and needs to be smoother. Teaching a writer to work on smoothing out the flow of the language would definitely help with the flow of these novels.I enjoyed this novel, and I suspect that most murder mystery readers will also enjoy it.

I love stories that make me think and I usually get the person before the end of the story! This is twice now I haven't! Please keep writing! The twist at the end was amazing! Thank you!

This is a well done plot and an exciting story
Stephanie and Andy are taking a vacation in a narrow boat on the canal. They stop for the night at Saltaire. In the morning, Steph sees a boat go by with a woman slumped over the tiller and a lot of blood around her neck and chest. Soon, Jav, a man they used to work with shows up to investigate. Jav suggests they call in Oldroyd, Steph and Andy's boss and Jav's prior boss. The dead woman is Annie a former folk singer who Steph and Andy saw arguing with another woman in the pub the previous night. The biggest problem is that it appears no one else has been on Annie's boat, and it's very unlikely she could have knifed herself in the back of her neck. It appears that Annie was a contentious person, and there are several possible suspects. When there is a second killing, folks are worried about a curse on the canal. Will Oldroyd solve the murders before there is another murder? This is a great addition to the series. I thank Netgalley and Thomas Mercer for the ARC so I could read the book before publication.

Satisfying read
JREllis’s characters always love their work, and are very keen to get absolute justice as they assess the crime scenes. i don’t actually have any idea what DCI Oldroyd looks like, but I have a good understanding about how his brain works. Neat plots. Endearing characters. I lived on the Yorkshire coast for some 30 years, and enjoy all the snippets he includes about the culture and history of the Dales .

Another Yorkshire mystery solved by the indomitable Oldroyd
I do so enjoy books by J.R. Ellis. His descriptions of the Yorkshire country are so clear you feel that you are there. Love the storyline and how Oldroyd "gets his man/woman, fascinating. Thank you 😊

Really good
This is a very good story with lots of interesting history. Perhaps it helps that I was born in Bradford and lived in Shipley that this just resonates with me. My mums cousin lived in Saltaire, in one of those terraced houses built originally by Sir Titus Salt. Th whole area is so familiar that reading it made me long to be back in Yorkshire. Though I could do without the murders! This was a great book and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
