Honestly, I did not know what to expect when I decided to rent this film. But, to my delight, I found myself thinking about the characters long after the film finished. Underneath the veil of Muslim fundamentalism lies regular every day people wanting a world of song and dance without religion being forced into their lives. The movie does not make the characters want to leave their homeland but rather have a life infused between western and middle eastern cultures. The political climate does take an emotional toll on women which is reflected in the lives of these three characters. The lead actress is beautiful as a daughter trying to fit into such a repressive culture despite her parent's past association with everything muslim fundamentalist extremes paints as dirty. This film had the earthy qualities of an Almodovar film but can only go so far given suppression of women in Muslim society.

interesting
The movie is a little hard to follow at times, but one can piece them all together. I think that the message that the director is putting out kind of overshadows the plot, often in the movie...the ending doesnt give much satisfaction either, but that may be intentional. I think its an interesting look to see the problems that were coming up in Algeria in the early 2000's, as well as issues that have cropped up in many other countries much longer ago than this. Its refreshing though, because it is not really white-washed image of a Muslim country where the people are so innocent and victims of this and that and pious... but are real and some choose to make the same poor choices that many in the West do. DONT watch with your parents/kids/ relatives or anyone you may be shy around for any particular reason... because the movie gets to business pretty quickly and repeatedly.. if u know what i mean.

One of my favorite movies ever
I've watched this three times now.. the first time it frustrated me as I couldn't make sense of it, but it stuck with me so I watched it again a few weeks later and fell in love with it then.Recently I viewed it again after a couple of years and like it even more now. It's kinda hard to describe as on the surface it seems like just an odd tale of some interesting people living in Algeria, but I think that actually every character as well as every scene is a metaphor for social commentary on life in that country and city.. I dunno,I could be way off, but regardless it's an incredible work of art.

An intriguing view of life in Algeria
Good acting plus an interesting story where an impulsive act leads to tragic results. The mother, daughter, prostitute, and landlord with his family all living in the lower class apartment building are almost like an extended family. They sometimes squabble but they care about each other. Nobody really lives happily ever after, but it is a little surprising to see who ends up the happiest. The layouts of the houses of the well-to-do doctor and fortune teller were unusual and caught my attention.

Women's Life in Algiers
How many movies give on a chance to observe the people and architecture of contemporary Algiers? And to have as guide three exceptionally talented actresses? If one wants to get a sense of the scope of patriarchy in North Africa, one couldn't do better than watching this movie. 4 1/2 stars

I really enjoyed this movie
I really enjoyed this movie! It reminded me of Pedro Almodovar's work and the story teaches us lessons about life, being women and it shows how every decision we make impacts others.

Some movies try to show you the beauty and challenges ...
Some movies try to show you the beauty and challenges of a whole city and its culture, through the eyes of a relatable character. In that genre, this is a successful effort.

Great music.
A chance to experience the tragic effects of a regressive regime, juxtaposed against a suppressed culturally rich and vibrant world. All told through the complex lives of those displaced by the societal upheavals. Great music.
