Learning to love 90's wuxia.
OK a few things. I don't like Hong Kong 80's action cinema, especially when in a contemporary setting. But when it comes to 90s wuxia, I am getting more into it.This bluray from Eureka is another top draw release, lovingly presented with stunning restoration and a handful of extras to boot. The story is based on the Jin Yong novel Heaven sword and dragon sabre, a book which Chor Yuen adapted (parts of) at least 3 times for Shaw brothers. This film is bonkers, moving so fast, so much going on its head spinning, which could be a tad jarring for some, but trying to follow every plot thread is pointless, it's not really what these films are about. The main problem is, they never made a sequel, but any work of Chinese literature is so dense that we are never going to get the whole story, so my advice, enjoy the ride for what it is, a very good wuxia film.

Is it worth a re-appraisal?
I first watched this when it was initially released, back in the day of 3rd gen VHS copies and long waits. It was an era that Jet Li could do very little wrong - he was churning out great films nearly every six months, with the Once Upon a Time in China films, Fong Sai Yuk and Tai Chi Master being top of the list. Kung Fu Cult Master is a very different proposition and, one seeing it, I was a little bit dumbstruck. First of all, it is based on the tremendously complicated 'Heaven Sword, Dragon Sabre' book from Louis Cha, a work far too dense for one film to tackle (there was going to be a Kung Fu Cult Master 2, but box office was disappointing). I'm much more familiar with this style now, so perhaps I wouldn't be such a crushing disappointment. The action is certainly good, with excellent wirework throughout. BUT this is one of those where director Wong Jing gave full licence to his juvenile humour and the film becomes more like 'Confessions of a Kung Fu Cult Master' than anything else; oh how I hoped Robin Askwith would turn up! It becomes a very unfunny parody and wears out its welcome quickly; I remember how many of us hated this at the time. And yet, somehow, this has turned into a cult film and its reputation seems to have blossomed in recent years. Maybe time has been kind to it. Or maybe we are in such a dearth of cinematic creativity that even lesser films like this look impressive. Either way, it'll cost me £20 to find out...
