* SynopsisIt's Xmas in New York in the 2000s. A professional couple (Cruise, Kidman) are off to a fancy party. The Dr meets an ex-study buddy who dropped out and is now a professional pianist. Some models are flirting with Dr. Cruise. An older womanizer tries another differing approach to Kidman's seduction. The man's house where the party is happening has a request to the Dr. to see him upstairs as a naked hooker has an overdose and needs attention. This is sorted and the party holder is so grateful for the help from Cruise. When back home they smoke a joint and get into a verbal discussion about what is and isn't sexual about these two meetings. With breathtaking frankness Kidman expresses her sexual attraction to another person so strong she would have risked everything in her marriage for one night's sexual thrills with this other man. Cruise is stunned. Their telephone rings and a patient has died, He travels to the daughter fathers dead home. Again sexual attraction is here as the daughter of the dead man kisses him passionately.Much later, there is one point when he gatecrashes a very exclusive party, and the people are either dressed in costume disguises, or are actively doing sexual acts in many forms. These nudes, for the want of a better phrase witness, are all carrying out a dogging party. This is only seen from some distance and is not graphic but enough to carry the story. He's threatened with severe consequences if he tells his discovery to anyone. He needs to resolve what all these directions of and around sex mean for himself and the way he sees the world.* CommentaryThis exploration of the differing sexual slices in the meaning of different things in different contexts sends him obsessively finding solutions to his worries and desires. It is the usage of say swear words and the meaning of hate and is so narrowly defined with sexual acts in crude language that is a surprise to me anyway I had not seen or thought this way before. The script follows the character through the maze of situations where the flavour of sex and its relational forms is different and reflective in surprising ways. Cumulative to how many ways sex is so many ways influences thoughts actions and opinions,Originally, I went to the local cinema to see this movie when it was released. It's good but slow. So you need to be in a mindset to engage and appreciate this. I bought it on DVD a long while ago and as a treat, I would watch the movie around the time it was set, Xmas. It had a luminosity in the colours that was great. The DVD failed, so I bought the movie on Netflix. The print quality in this streamed version is 16:9, as compared to the original DVD 4;3. The streaming movie is darker, with less contrast, and not as visually beautiful, i.m.h.o.

I actually thought it wasn't such a good film in spite of all the hype. I don't think it's bad just not that great

great story line and plot in adult environment

Watched this before, perhaps when was out first but this time I was exceptionally surprised how bad this film was.Wrong on so many levels (if not all) - idea is interesting but the screenplay is quite bad with a lot of fake turns and numerous obsolete scenes that made into the final cut. Pace is painfully slow and I actually prefer slow 20th century films but where there is a lot of meaning or aesthetics involved.Casting was bad and, contrary to many, I found most of the actors completely unconvincing, especially Nicole Kidman. Her bum shown so many times did not compensate... As for Tom Cruise, this looks like a gone wrong rehearsal for the character in Collateral where he's at his best. The scenes at the costume shop could have been lost for good as they were completely irrelevant to the plot imho. 'Secret society' ritual was a completely joke and I would only accept it as a ridicule of what the reality probably is, and there is definitely such reality. The opening with Walts N2 by Shostakovich was absolutely inadequate as this is the one of the few musical gems that least apply to America and New York. The lonely 'suspense' piano is actually annoying. The characters of rich Ziegler and Millic could well fit a comedy plot and their acting was absolutely inadequate. Dialogue throughout the whole film was an absolute fake.
