Everyone should have this soundtrack!!!
What a soundtrack! I have listened to other Mancini albums, but this arguably is his best non-greatest hits album. It is very listenable from beginning to end. The bonus track on the import is interesting for the addition of vocals (Just For Tonight).Hatari has three musical themes runing throught: the first is the title and "The Sounds of Hatari." Since this is set in Africa, these two tracks set the stage for actors to chase and capture wild animals. For the comical side, you have the classic "Baby Elephant Walk," which exactly is what the music was for in the movie. This tune is equivalent to the Pink Panther theme in clearity and rememberance. The song has become an international hit and recorded by numerous artists over the decades. Reading IMDB website, Mancini had written Baby Elephant Walk on a whim while they were shooting the scene of the baby elephants. We also have "Your Father's Feathers" and "Crocodile, Go Home."And on the cocktail side of things, we have "Just For Tonight", "Night Side", "Big Band Bwana", and "The Soft Touch."The music is great! Henri Mancini at his best! Don't hesitate in buying it!

One of Mancini's Best Scores
Henry Mancini was known for light jazz from TV (Peter Gunn, Mr. Lucky) and smooth background sounds for films like "Breakfast at Tiffany's," and "Days of Wine and Roses," so "Hatari" must have been way out of his comfort zone, but he nailed it (especially in the 6-minute suspense piece for the rhino hunt called "The Sounds of Hatari"). (The hunting is for zoos, not senseless slaughter.) There was also "Baby Elephant Walk," and some smooth sounds, but the atmospheric African sounds are terrific. I would also recommend the movie--a lot of fast action that had no CGI special effects: it was all real.

Prime Mancini at His Best
I always thought that the cut "Sounds of Hatari" on this album was one of Henry Mancini's finest compositions. But beware, this download has nothing to do with 24/96 high-definition audio. It is normal 16-bit compressed MP3. Amazon should remove the 24/96 from the title. Other than that caveat, it's just fine.

Mr. Mancini at his best.
This was the very first recording I remember asking my parents to purchase. It had a profound impact on me, even at the age of ten, and along with Bobby Colomby of Blood, Sweat & Tears, was a major influence in fueling a lifelong passion for playing drums (Sounds of Hatari) and establishing an early appreciation of the jazz idiom (Crocodile Go Home, Night Side, Big Bad Bwana). 50 years later I find myself playing drums in a jazz band and inspired anew by these superb arrangements. What a wonderful and lasting piece of fine musical craftsmanship. Thanks Mr. Mancini.

Mancini at his best, and very nostalgic, too
If you love old Wayne movies, this was one of the best. Mancini's soundtrack is very evocative.
