ArmA: Armed Assault (PC DVD)

As a huge fan of Operation Flashpoint, I had high hopes for Arma. However, I decided to hold off on buying it when it first came out due to the negative reviews and the reports of multiple game breaking bugs.Buy the time I did get round to buying it, I was pleased to find that the majority of the bugs had been fixed. While the single player campaign isn't as good as it should've been, the multiplayer is fantastic and there is an extensive modding community. The same realistic gameplay that made OpFlash so enjoyable to play is back, and the graphics and sounds are spot-on.These days, Arma is showing its age but it is still impressive for an 8 year old game. There have since been two new iterations of the series - ARMA 2 and more recently ARMA 3, which have seen graphics and gameplay improvements.Thoroughly recommended for fans of realistic, tactical military shooters.

As a passive gamer playing games like battlefield 2 and F.E.A.R, i was told about ARMA 2 and how amazing it was however since i didn't wish to spend £22 on a game from amazon i decided to buy ARMA Armed Assault instead since it was only two years behind (2007) installation went fine however from the on it was an uphill struggle, firstly the career mode didn't work, the opening mission just stayed on one still picture why the soundtrack continued to play (i waited for half an hour) and the loading is slow and takes its time, so i figured never mind, ill go on the other single player activities like single missions and things like that, and in the end decided to have a go on the firing range test part of the tutorial stage (since i was a very good shot on BF2 and F.E.A.R with Assault Rifles & Marksman Rifles) to get acclimatized with the shooting style which i later learned had this silly floating tool (which admittedly you can turn off as i found out) but even without it the aiming is Overly Hard and awkward. and too top it off the Graphics even on max were awful! the refresh rate at 75hz is diabolical, the surroundings seem to just be drawing themselves slowly as you walk into them ruining your chance to get into the game, the weapon doesn't feel 3d in anyway and a lot of other things prevent you from getting hooked into the game itself. These are some of the many issues that have forced me to just put this game on the Shelf and leave it there, long story short if you want a good first person shooter for not much money buy battlefield 2 or if your going for this type of dodgy Russian terrain feel buy STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl as its a much more quality game (excusing the bugs).

I wanted so badly to like ArmA because I am totally in love with the 'rest' of the Operation Flashpoint series.Sadly, my heart has been broken. There are lots of bugs - with workarounds sure but why should I have to? A lot of fun has been taken out of the game, certainly it appears to be less 'interesting' than operation flashpoint. As for graphics and sound, I can see where a lot of progress has been made in theory but it makes very little difference to the game.The AI is a joke: the opposition are apparently all stone cold expert killers while your colleagues deserve to get sued by the headless chicken defamation league.Overall, ArmA made me re-install Operation Flashpoint, which is still a wonderful series of games that any serious combat sim gamer should own.

I have changed this review and upgraded it to a full five stars, as with there previous title {operation flashpoint} it needed modding and patching before it came into it own , but i did have to wait a good year ,even so i have much enjoyed this after initial disappointment.The Ai is inferior to Arma 2 and buildings still somewhat basic in places, but after modding its well worth a try.

Love ARMA series due to it's mod-ability and programming features, audio a bit naff though.

In it's day operation Flashpoint was the game to have,Great graphics and gameplay, Tho a little buggy, I have been looking forwards to ARMA for a long time mainly so i could give BF2 a rest.After playing the Demo however, It just looks like the old flashpoint game. There are a lot of really good features, But imho it looks dated already, Play the Demo before parting with the cash imho, Or pay a quid for flashpoint, Graphically & gamplay wise theres not much difference.I will just Add that i bought the Full version of this and i was more disapointed than the Demo and financially worse off.
