Very poor quality handle
The media could not be loaded. I am writing this while I make up my mind about keeping this. The injection moulded handle has large extrusions of plastic up to 2mm sticking out from the handle,(right where the soft bit of your skin between thumb and first finger would be). The bits of the moulding don't even all line up, so there are gaps as well. There is a further large extrusion on the bottom of the inside edge, right where your little finger goes. The screw holding the blade on at the front is a low quality Philips/Straight of some light alloy. Why have both on such a cheap screw? It is going to wear very quickly no matter how careful you are. The screw holding the handle on might be a Philips head, but it is of such a poor quality it's hard to be certain. There are four clear edges and a lot of open space, (a Pozi would fit as well because of the open space)It is covered by Silverlines' lifetime guarantee, but would you invalidate that by sanding/filing down the handle to make it useable. The body of the rasp is a light aluminium alloy casting. Don't drop it, it will shatter if it hits anything hard. (One of the reasons my workshop area is carpeted, so many tools have cheap alloy castings that shatter. Second reason for carpet is that it holds the sawdust, so you can walk in and out to the house without a trail of sawdust. Third reason is warmth). The blade does appear to be a mild steel. It has sharp edges to the teeth, a very aggressive profile, and lots of holes for clearing debris. It looks like it would be effective in rapidly removing wood. This has the feel of a disposable item. The whole thing might only last a couple of blade changes. I was looking for a middle quality item that would last at least 20 years, by which time I probably won't be around to worry about it. For some reason there are no good quality rasps on the market at the moment.Overall this feels like a very cheap item that you will be claiming on the guarantee for. I have never tried claiming from Silverline. There other products I own, some for 20-30 years, have been reliable.

Silverline Surform is this same as the Stanley (5-21-122)
This Silverline 103696 Surform is this same as the Stanley (5-21-122) Surform it just has a different handle & it’s a lot cheaper, as the Stanley costs around £10 more. You can unscrew the handle & revers it, it can then be used in the file setting. The blade it comes with is a bit naff but is OK for fine work. You CAN GET REPLACEMENT BLADES but not Silverline, Use Stanley Spare blades, Size: 10in - 250mm, Numbers - 021293, 021505, 021393, 021506, 021299, 029507 & 021508It does suffer the same as the Stanley in that the blade can become loose, so keep an eye on the screw tention.I’ve got both & both work as well as each other for DIY light use, not so sure if it would satisfy a tradesman.
