The flat file and rasp are suitable for general deburring and filing work on iron and steel, including filing of sharp corners and internal shoulders. The half-round file and rasp, tapered toward the point in width and thickness, are designed for shaping curves and deburring, and filing of large holes and flat surfaces. The round file and rasp, slightly tapered towards the point are suitable for the filing of concave surfaces, such as enlarging round holes or cutting a scalloped edge. The triangular (or three square) file is designed for the filing of internal angles and flat surfaces and is suitable for smoothing acute angles less than 90 degrees. The square file is suitable for smoothing the edges of rectangular holes.
