Good little book that gets you up and running with Docker.Takes about an afternoon to work through.Very clear and straightforward. I should declare I know Nigel and have worked with him - but this is my own copy paid for by myself.

a bit basic for the money
I have to say I was a bit disappointed with this book. It's aimed at a very low-skill level audience, which isn't immediately obvious from the description, and it's light on content. The author has gone for a very 'teachy' style, with loads of 'what-we're-going-to-cover-next' and 'what-we've just-learned' summarising-type stuff, which if you stripped it all out back to the bare content, there's not much there. Certainly not £19 worth when the O'Reilly masterwork is currently on offer at £22......In summary - Docker is a technology that allows you to virtualise an OS, rather than a hardware platform that you then run an OS on (Virtual Machine). This means that it's very light on resources compared to a VM, so you can afford to have many mini apps all running on their very own virtualised OS and integrating over a network. The advantages of this include easy maintenance at the individual app level, and apps can be deployed in their own container with all their own dependencies, without having to keep all those dependencies in synch. If you need more than that, google it.There, you don't need to buy the book now!

Excellent guide for anyone learning Docker!! SO GOOD
I don't usually write reviews, however this book blew me away. I am a tech professional who needs to learn Docker and after slugging through many videos and how-to's I stumbled upon Nigels teachings. Nigel's "Getting Started with Docker" is nothing short of a revelation for anyone seeking to demystify the complex world of containerization and Docker. I felt like I was having a mental block while trying to learn containerization on my own and I couldn't quite put the pieces together, but Nigel's books and videos have become an unparalleled resource for my career! I am not really a book person when it comes to learning but I feel like this book so was SO easy to follow. I am also a person who needs to know how everything works from the ground up to really grasp a concept and this book filled in all the gaps that were missing for me.Nigel has a remarkable gift for taking complex, often daunting concepts and breaking them down into easily understandable and digestible pieces. His writing style is so engaging, which made learning Docker so much more enjoyable. I highly highly recommend buying this book if you are learning Docker or as a refresher. I have learned more from Nigel's books than I have with any other Docker resource!Even if you're a seasoned software developer, a system administrator, a DevOps engineer, or anyone working in a tech-related field, the knowledge you'll gain from "Getting Started with Docker" will be applicable and valuable! Trust me- I am the worst student and I feel like I might be able to give a mini class on Docker after reading this book!

This book is a very good and short introduction to Docker.Lots of graphics, examples and not an overwhelming amount of content! This makes it an excellent way for anyone - even interested non-programmers - to get a quick overview of Docker.

Highly recommend for its clarity, depth, and practical approach to mastering Docker.

Kickstart your journey with Docker with this book
As a mentor and teacher in the field of machine learning and software, I am always in the look for good resources in the areas of containerization and practical examples. I approached this introductory book on Docker with a blend of curioisity and openess. To my surpise, the author has done a pheonomenal job in demystifying Dockerand kickstarting the reader to become proficient with Docker. The book begins with an intro to containers, and the big picture on running modern applications, I was impressed with the clarity in which the author introduced concepts, and even Docker can be a foreign subject for some one in ml space, the author's approach makes it simple and with a lot of aha moments, in which you really feel mentored by the author. The labs are particularly noteworthy and modern, and it has a cool intro of Docker and webassembly which is a great since I agree with the Author that is the next step on packaging applications. As an expert, I appreaciated the content covered, and is going to be one of the first resources I will share with people that are starting their journey with Docker Desktop, and package development. In conclusion, if you are starting out with Docker or are looking for a guide that correctly introduces container concepts, this book is baluable addition to your library. Highly recommended!
