Overall a very good Pyrometer with a much higher than average temp range
I got this for metal working since it goes up to 2732 degrees. These are my initial thoughts after using the first time.Likes-Well constructed, rubberized grip feels good in the hand.-30:1 distance ratio means it has a small beam. The beam is flanked by two laser dots (adjustable to one or none) which lets you see what you're measuring. This allows for narrow measurements behind objects.-High temperature range allows measuring hot metals in the range I need. This is two to three times higher than most infrared meters.-Comes with a soft case.-You can set alarms (High and low) to sound when temps are met. Useful when working with metal.-Has other functions such as logging Max High Temp, Max Low Temp, Average Temp, difference.-Display light on/off. Useful to see display when working in a low light environment.-Flashlight mode, to illuminate the object in low light conditions.-Emissivity Adjustment. Emissivity is the ratio of reflected heat. Adjusting this allows for more accurate measuring of highly reflective objects that would throw off other meters. Example, Water is different than snow. There is a minimal chart in the book but you can find much larger tables online. The default .95 seems to works for the iron I'm working with.Dislikes-Manual is minimal, but functional.-Beeps every time you take a measurement. Not a biggie but there may be circumstances you want quiet.-Autoshutoff is somewhat quick but again, not a biggie.Overall a solid product and fulfills my metalworking needs.

Helpful laser thermometer!
I picked this up to help read the thermal performance and temperature for walls as we investigated possible insulation issues. It is easy to use, seems accurate and is well made for the price. Not too expensive, not too cheap, but just right. Now that we have it we are finding many uses for it. Works well for our at home uses. One note, read the instructions when installing the batteries, there is small screw to remove that is not easy seen beforehand.

Without good documentation, even great products are flawed.
The product actually arrived a day sooner than I anticipated, which was a nice touch. Then I opened the manual...After trying to figure out what the manufacturer was trying to tell me in the manual, I decided that if it's going to be, it is up to me. So...After about a half hour or so of fiddling with it I seem to have gotten enough hands on to make it work.It is very fast and chocked full of features that I will probably never use, but hey, the price is right! This thermometer is well worth the money.I use it mostly for cooking. Not for the food (duh) but the pans, the grill and what not.I've used it in my shop for electronics. Checking component temps. In the house I can check the temperature at and around doors and windows inside and outside. It's a good product that gets better as you maneuver through the self paced learning curve. All in all a very good product.IMHO, THE DOCUMENTATION WILL KEEP THIS PRODUCT FROM EVER ATTAINING IT'S TRUE PLACE IN THE MARKET.

BTMETER ... GREAT PRODUCT!
I started knifemaking as a new hobby a few months ago and quickly learned that there is a ton of science behind this new thing I started. When you use a forge or better yet, when you have a need quench an alloy, you need to take that alloy to a certain temperature so certain things happen to the blade. The temp I needed to reach was pretty high though... like over 1,500 degrees! The BTMETER allows you to pull you blade out of the forge and check the temperature quickly & easily. Love it so far... it's easy to operate and is a good quality buy in my opinion! Great product!

Perfect for my needs
This was perfect for my needs, checking the temperature of metal during forging and heat treating.I didn't realize just how handy it would become just for quickly checking if a work piece was cool enough to handle... it now lives on my bench within handy reach and gets used way more than I had originally intended!Accuracy seems OK, but I have now way of checking with any precision, and have no real need for my application.Dual laser is very handy for determining the measurement spot size, and is still easily visible inside the forge.Great value for a non contact thermometer with a high temp range.

Very inaccurate, see the fine print further in the listing
The bad:The listing shows accuracy of +/- 2% in the text description at the beginning of the listing. However, there is an additional box showing more details further down in the listing that asterisks that significantly. This is like legal fine print as its not obvious the initial listing will get watered down with fine print. The fine print lists +/- 7.2F < 32F, and +/-(2% + 3.6F) for temps > 32F. This means that at around room temp (70F) it will show errors of +/- 5F. My experience is a bit worse (+/-8F) when compared to a thermapen that is +/- 0.7F that has been well acclimated to the surface in question (the kitchen counter). Its also not very repeatable. Shoot the countertop and get 60F (when thermapen says 68F). Carry it outside and shoot both hot and cold (clouds, the hot grill) carry it back in and shoot the counter again and get 74F. The counter didn't change temps. The good:It can shoot the burning charcoal in a ceramic grill without going over its max limit. Hopefully this lets me zero in on pizza without burnt crust using just the stone on a spider grate (instead of both the stone and a heat deflector). It also has a nice solid feel and two aiming lasers.Instead of not very useful features (the very dim white flashlight LEDs) manufacturer should get the accuracy and repeatability better. There are other inexpensive (smaller range) infrared thermometers out there that are far more accurate and repeatable. I have another such unit which matches the thermapen within a degree or two when taken through the same exercise described above (at the same time in the other hand).
