I need something to repel cats from my garden, without keeping wild birds away, what would you recommend?

Battery operated Cat repellent V2 Ultra sonic cat (and others) scarer. These units seem to work. They are heavy on batteries, though. Maybe power by a 4.5v supply from a transformer.

Can one use re-chargeable batteries?

Yes you can, but personally, due to the nature they are outside all the time I prefer to use 'one shot' batteries and ditch them once no longer responsive.

Will these affect hedgehogs

The first line of the description clearly states; 'This unit has been designed using our considerable experience to be as effective as possible in repelling cats without the need of complicated dials.'

I am looking to keep my cat from going near the busy road at the front of my house but let her explore at the back garden ?

I think these should do the job they are for repelling cats as the ultrasonics don't agree with them and keep them away, providing you form a barrier covering the exit / s to the road theory has it that the cat should stay away. Perhaps a trial run away from danger would be advisable befor any danger is present the consequences of them not providing a deterant does not bare thinking about.
