The Secret: The gripping new crime thriller in the Jack Reacher series from the Sunday Times No.1 bestselling authors

Another brilliant read.
An absolutely great and entertaining read by a fantastic author. Lee’s writing in this book was captivating and almost Fleming like. His twists and turns were exceptional and kept you guessing all the way through. I hope that Lee writes more books in the style of this one. The Secret for me was a genuine Crime Thriller and I am looking forward to reading more like it.

Wanted to see what all the fuss was about
Curious about the Lee Child/Jack Reacher/Tom Cruise/ Alan Ritchson phenomenon. When I found out there were 28 books, I decided to read a representative sample of them. I couldn't read all 28. So I read them in the order 1, 7, 11, 14, 15, 21, 22, and 28.1 was very entertaining. Written in about 1998. I liked the insouciant one-liners and the crazy confidence of perpetual victory against multiple adversaries. The fight sequences were just about believable, so the story was just about plausible. The Amazon Prime video series 1 is based on this book. The main difference from the book is everyone's using mobile phones instead of public telephones and ripping pages out of telephone directories.Book 7 was set in a gloomy seaside mansion in New England. By now the fight sequences are starting to become OTT (over-the-top). And the body count is atrocious.Book 11 was a page-turner, but I began to wonder if Reacher beds a different woman in each book before casually leaving them at the end. It's the one where the baddies drop the goodies to their deaths from a helicopter over the California desert. This becomes the Appalachian Mountains in the Amazon Prime series version, which is set in NYC instead of LA.Book 14 (61 hours) was memorable for descriptions of crime fighting at subzero temperatures (North Dakota). A hitman would freeze to death if he had to wait too long to ambush his victim, so Reacher realised he couldn't be hiding in those bushes. I don't think he goes to bed with anyone, but he does develop a phone crush on a lady cop in Virginia whom he calls for advice.Book 15. Reluctantly I had to read this one as Our Hero appears to die at the end of book 14. He very implausibly survives. This time he's in Nebraska in early Spring where he encounters a farming community being terrorised by a local family of bullies with a Scottish surname.Book 21. Night School. About jihadis in Germany. I read this several years ago and didn't fancy rereading it.Book 22. The Midnight Line. This was the most boring book so far because I kept falling asleep and when I woke up I couldn't remember the plot and had to backtrack about 10 pages to get back into it. The body count is far lower and Reacher declines a couple of fights as he doesn't want to kill too many people (how nice of him). The baddies aren't as bad as usual. Also, amazingly he brushes aside the amorous advances of a pretty lady (how chivalrous)! However, he makes up for it later with another lady, and they both part ways as if nothing had happened.Book 28. In real life, Reacher must be 64 in 2024. So, this 2023 book is set back in 1992, when Reacher was 32 and still in the Army. This time the baddies are two women with homely names like Roberta and Barbara, so I got the impression they would turn out not to be quite so bad at the end.I know Book 29 is on its way, but I've read my representative sample.

Not Jack
An interesting story but failed to get me involved. Left no impression and I could not care less about any of the characters. Not the Jack Reacher I know. No insights at all into the character or motivations behind his actions. A robot. No thrills or edge of the seat intensity. Story telling for the sake of story telling. Who cares?

Great read!
A very good story, good representation of Lee Child. I enjoy his books. An apt topic, of the world, little known for its honesty of chemical reactions.

lee child is back
Familiar plot lines but can see more of Lee Child style than Andrew in this book. Good pace all through except the end was a bit rushed.
