I have never seen an sds max rotary hammer that can do rotation only. Doesn't hammering while drilling take off the diamonds on the drill bit?

Hammer mode will not work with core bits, rotation only is a must. I ended up purchasing a SDS plus adapter instead so I could use my core bit with a Bosch Bulldog SDS plus drill that has a rotation only mode. My Bosch SDS Max drill does not have a rotation only mode and turned out useless for core drilling.

using 11/4 macho B&D rotary, uses spline bits, drilling 2 inch hole in 8 inch block. what do you suggest?

This solid bit fits several different core bits and works well even up to my 4 5" cote bit, but if your rotary drill will only hammer drill and not just drill you will ruin your bit. The core bits are designed to rotate only. No hammering.
