FPS with an interesting twist
This first person perspective shooter is an interesting mix of history and science fiction. There is no printed manual. (one is included on the disc) The game installs easily, no online connection is needed. It is not a long game. It took me about 25 hours to play through but better players could probably do it in considerably less time. It was very stable. I experienced no freezes and only one crash. The game contains a large amount of f-words. (would have been better without the language)Most of the game is played in two time periods: the American War Between the States or the First World War. The game is linear as you must play a series of missions. You usually have a choice of which time period to go to but in the end you would have to complete them all so it doesn't really matter if you switch back and forth or not. The battlefields are fairly large. It isn't like so many games where you are confined to a narrow path. Most of the fighting takes place on open fields or wooded areas. There are some interesing twists to the game.Controls are typical for such a game. You can run, jump, crouch, shoot from the hip or aim down the barrel. Checkpoint saves are used but they are very numerous. There was only one place where I thought they missed one and I had to repeat a section about 20 times to get through it.The time travel element to the story made it a unique game in my experience. If you like history but not science fiction you won't like it. (and vice versa) It was actually more fun using the period weapons than the times it let you use modern weapons in the older time period. (no one seemed to notice when you did so) I agree with other reviewers that it would have been a good game without the time travel story. Call it Riflemen Through Time and add another one or two campaigns in different time periods. How about the Zulu wars, Boer war, the British Raj, Napoleonic Wars (think Richard Sharpe), Spanish American War, American Revolutionary War, etc.? There are so many areas that haven't been touched by the game designers. I think playing with the old single shot rifles is as much fun as using the newer weaponry.

A fantastic civil war game marred by the inclusion of pointless sci fi
Darkest of days is an interesting little endeavor- a first person war simulator that delivers battlefields with hundreds of combatants and lush, organic landscapes. The game is spread across several time periods, as the player takes the role of a time-traveling policeman of sorts. Supposedly KIA at Little Bighorn, you are in fact rescued from certain death to right errors in history. Of course there are rival time travelers, and in a fun twist, under extreme circumstances full war with futuristic weapons will erupt in the midst of historic battles with catastrophic results. The centerpiece of Days is clearly the American Civil War. The Civil War levels are the most colorful and detailed, the most exciting, and boast the largest, most epic battles. The other time periods seem more shallow and tacked on- I strongly suspect this game started life as a Civil War FPS and took on a veneer of sci-fi out of worries that 9 hours of reloading muskets and crawling through muddy cornfields might alienate players. It's a shame because to my knowledge there has NEVER been a Civil War FPS, while there are only a bazillion time travel ones.Oh well.Even now, 3 years out from its release, the huge armies that appear in Days are impressive to see, and while spreading a game's AI power across that many enemies at once makes them individually as dumb as bricks (single enemy soldiers will often stand there obliviously as you jump up and down in front of them) as a whole army the games enemies and AI allies behave with terrifying, antlike complexity. The outdoor environments look good too, with tons of murky water and foliage everywhere, although textures are shockingly low-rez and artificial structures don't look very good. All in all, Darkest of Days is an interesting tech demo that never spun up into a genuinely great game. It's worth it for civil war buffs who will delight in the single-shot weapons and clouds of powder smoke over the battlefield, but these same history fans may also be turned off when the Battle of Antietam is invaded by space commandos from the future.PROS-Epic war on a scale few other FPSs can match, especially in the Civil War levels-Responsive, tight controls-Smart use of shaders and other effects to create futuristic light shows amid realistic period settings-Well-modeled, realistically behaving weaponsCONS-Engine delivers lots of popup and doesn't look too hot-Individual enemies are about as smart as bags of doorknobs-Dopey time-travel elements ruin a perfectly good game about the Civil War-Dialog and voice acting that may be even worse than Maelstrom-Low production value UI and menus

Decent time travel experience
Are not many of these games out there. That said the game is somewhat average at best and does almost nothing well. Story is convoluted, characters are forgettable, gun play is okay. Not impressed for a time travel game. It is like they took a futuristic theme and applied it to distant past, sort of like trying to put ketchup on peanut butter sandwich. Does not really work great.

Great game and graphics
I would rate this FPS above average. The game play is enjoyable and refreshing-- a modern, full auto mg against muskets is pretty original. The only part of the game I didn't care for was the language but in today's world it will be ignored because, sadly, its so common. Other than that I would recommend this game.

Has bugs but can be fixed
This is an excellent Civil War type game. If you are fan of civil war games, instead of purchasing any of the civil war games out there like the History Channel ones, this one offers more action and gore. Despite it being a Futuristic game, I never use any of the futuristic weapons because it ruins what could have been a great civil war game had they dropped the futuristic theme and cut the ww1 battles.

Playing this is like watching a B-Movie, in the best way.
If you like B-movies, you might like this game. It isn't a good game, but it is fun. The concept is a blast, but the gameplay, graphics, writing, etc. are all sub-par.That said, if you find yourself watching B-movies for fun, this is still a good game to play through. You'll get some laughs, at least.

The darkside of PC videogames!
I expected more from this PC videogame. Is this good and working even well on my laptop! The big issue with this PC videogame is the setup and installation process. It does not install, just like other PC videogames on the program folder. Instead, install itself on the user folder. In addition, there is a big bug in the encoding with no available uninstall program! You must uninstall manually and can cause error in the register of Windows. Also, this PC videogame does not come with an instruction booklet! Buy this PC videogame at a low cost and make sure it will work on your system! Because, you going to be stuck with it on your computer, without the uninstall program!

Great story, but the AI and the graphics could be beefed up
The Good:The game delivers on the promise of the story of going back in time. The maps are quite large and with varried terrain and buildings.Players can use stationary weapons and pick up weappons they find. The game play is straightforward FPS.The Bad:The computer AI is sometimes a little quirky.Graphics and controls can be a little choppy when there are multiple characters on screen.Sound bites are repetative throughout the game. The Verdict:It is OK for a historical FPS game, but could be much better.I did not regret purchasing it, but would have a hard time recommending it to others.
