Q: Do these come with a case of some kind?

No. Mine did not come with a case.

Q: Are the filters removable?

Yes. In fact they NEED to be removed in order to clean the silicone parts that fit into your ears. These are good at what they say they will do, which is protect from sudden impact noises without giving you that plugged up feeling that regular foam inserts often can. Keep in mind the noise rating on these is only 18. (If you are at a gun range I would recommend something with a much higher rating. Something on the order of 30-33 nrr would serve better.) I used a very similar product for years on stage as a musician and they really saved my ears. They are also good for attending concerts.

Q: how are they for side sleeping?

I have never used them for sleeping. They are good for live music because the reduce the overall sound level and especially impact (drum) sound. They reduce sound levels when the source of sound exceeds a threshold (about 90 dB). I hope you are not trying to sleep in an area where the noise level is that high. They protrude from the ear some so sleeping on the side would most likely be uncomfortable. I also don't think they would shut out the noise sufficiently for sleeping.

Q: does this block the sound of a barking dog

These are sound reducers. They will not eliminate the sound of a barking dog, but will reduce the sound level at your ear drum, if the dog bark is loud.
