It has some controversial subject matter
None of the reviews I read set me up to answer the questions that came after my child began reading. The one girl has 2 moms, and the other's unwillingness to talk about her real mom should make the content of this book for more mature readers!

here is what my ten year old daughter said about this book, "I loved this book sooooooooooooo much that I read it two times! It's about two friends who make an unforgettable friendship. They were born on the same day, their names are both palindromes (Emme and Hannah) they both come up with palindromes that I could never think of!, they are on the same swim team and Hannah writes, "go Emme og" on Emme's leg in swim meets and Emme writes, "go Hannah og" on hannah's leg ( go emme og, go hannah og are palindromes) . everyone calls them the og twins. I think that Carlolyn Mackler did a great job on the book BEST FRIENDS NEXT DOOR it is definitely one of my favorite books! I hope Carolyn Mackler writes a 2nd book."

Really fun and cute!
Loved this book! It was SO cute, and any girls between the ages 7-13ish would LOVE it!! I think it was a great book. It was kind of fast for me, I finished it in one day, lol, but it was still good. It's kinda long so it should probably last you longer than it was for me :)I love how little girls could still read it, because there really aren't many good (and clean) chapter books out there for littler children!! I wouldn't hesitate to let any little girl read this, they will love it, and it's so appropriate, except that one of the main characters has two mothers...? I didn't really get why that needed to be in a juvenile book, but tbh it's okay and there's really no details or anything :)Otherwise it's a great book and I'd definitely recommend it.

THIS IS A REVIEW MY BY MY DAUGHTER MADISON:This is a great book! I finished it in 1 day. It so interesting! Every chapter makes you want to keep on reading. I think this book is great for kids like me that are 8-12 years old. I don't have many words to describe it but all I can say is that "Best Friends Next Door" is an awesome book!;-)That's it for now!

Great book! Ignore the bigots and haters!
My 10-year-old daughter and I have been reading this book and I felt compelled to write a review after reading some of the hateful, ignorant comments made by others in their reviews. What I love about this book is that it is so inclusive. As soon as we got the part where Hannah sees the two women get out of the car, I actually started to get really excited about the possibility that the author was going to reveal that they were a couple. When that turned out to be the case, I was so happy. My daughter wasn’t at all phased by the fact that Emme has two moms. Maybe that’s because I have brought up my daughter to love everyone and to know that there are many different kinds of families. Maybe it’s because since she was a preschooler she has had friends with two moms and friends with two dads. She knows that love is love is love. I just really appreciate that there are now books she can read that will reinforce what I have tried to teach her. There is nothing in this book that is inappropriate for children. I would encourage any parent who wants their child to grow up to be a decent person to read this book with their child.

Listened to the audio. I am not particularly a fan of Tara Strong's voice work here. She does this weird nasally thing that's especially jarring because the other narrator doesn't do it at all. (Tara Strong is the voice actress for Raven from Teen Titans, so just imagine a book being narrated that way. It's also annoying because, as you can see by her extensive resume, that's a choice she made for this particular character.)So yeah, that's my least favorite part of the book.My favorite part is probably Hannah saying she wants to be referred to as a "former only child" instead of a big sister because that is the kind of pettiness I can get behind.Anyway, this is very slice of life and the focus is on female friendships and what it means to build a best friendship and also what it means to have a best friendship change. You know, plus the chaos of adolescence, which for these two include moving to a new city (Emme) and awaiting a new sibling (Hannah). The dual narrative works well here, especially before they become friends and after they have their big fight.Oh and, as always, I am here for kids realizing they're in over their heads and going to adults for help.

Excellent young read
Fabulous book! My daughter chose it for a 5th grade book report and loved every minute of reading it. The writer did such a great job showing what young girls go through and the friendships that they make in their youth. My daughter has two moms and it was such a nice surprise for her to see characters like herself being normalized.
