Shades of Light: Making Tailored Lampshades Paperback – Illustrated, 1 July 2014

This book is an absolute must for two kinds of people - those who already make lampshades (like I do) and for those who don't but would like to learn. There are other books on the market but this is the only one I have found so far that exactly and accurately teaches us how to make shades the traditional way - and the right way. Tips on stitches, frames, the workroom are given to us, as well as clear and illustrated instructions on how to make the most amazing lampshades - pleated, knife pleated, gathered and lined - all the details are here. Once the reader has tried out the projects and instructions, the art of making professional lampshades is within their grasp. You can use this book to make a shade for fun, but also you can use this book to gain a serious skill in the Interiors world. An excellent book for all lovers of lighting, art, making, interiors, fabric - excellent, and highly recommend.

I really enjoyed this book, it is well written and is a practical hands on guide to lampshade making. If you are looking for glossy pictures or step by step projects, then this may not be for you. I f you are looking for a no frills book full of practical advice, from cutting out fabric to embellishments then you'd be in for an enjoyable read. I actually read it in one day, but its the kind of book you will refer back to over and over again.

I have been lucky enough to have been taught how to make lampshades by the author and having this book is like having Ruth sat next to me. The instructions and diagrams are very easy to understand and whatever I get stuck on I know the solution will be found on these pages. I also enjoyed reading about the history of lampshades, styles old and new as well as inspiration for designs galore...!! I pick this book up countless times to read and re-read already, and anyone thinking of buying it will not be disappointed.

As a lampshade maker myself I was interested to see the contents and instructions .which are well laid out and easy to follow . I loved the history bit at the beginning ,its always interesting to know how things began and develop. The lampshades themselves are beautifully made and photographed.

Good clear instructions but, where can I get the ‘Tall Bowed Empire’ shade that features so prominently?It would help if there were details of suppliers of the frames and specialist tools and materials used in the book. It’s impossible to try out the suggested projects without this information.

Great reference book to dip into.

Even if you think you know how to make lampshades, this book is great to have at your finger tips as a reference and for inspiration.
