I leave it as is. But I have only used it on frames and other smalls.

Can this be used on metal? I'm looking to change up my bathroom and was wondering if I could use this on the towel rack instead of buying a new one

Yes I have used it on metal. And also a little goes a long way. Perhaps a clear spray seal or finish would keep it from wearing off after a lot of use
