wow - so excited
i have a dvd collection of over 2000, but can honestly say I have never been so excited about any other release. for years i dithered about buying the region 1 version, and even when in the states last year, in a dvd store in manhatten that is at the bottom of broadway over 3 floors as you get towards battery park for the statue of liberty and is well worth a look if you are ever over there, (i usually fill up a piece of hand luggage there) even though it was on sale at $10 each i just could not bring myself to watch it 'incomplete'. the songs used often helped portray the intent of a scene, and their removal meant that the scene was often affected as a result.so when i happened to do a spontaneous search for it and the R2 release was there i prayed the original soundtrack was complete - and much to my surprise it was!the series itself was of the highest calibre - instead of trying to cast 'big' names, they wisely went for relative unknown actors, but ones who seemed perfect for each role. it could easily have been a glorified, USA shoot'em up, but instead paid homage to the vietnam conflict, and portrayed many of the horrors of the war, but without the bad language and too much blood and gore - instead you were gripped by the drama and the development of the characters throughout - who can forget terence knox's down-to-earth portrayal of zeke and tony becker's role as percell, who starts as an ex-rotc volunteer in the pilot and ends up awol and hooked on heroin by season 3. there were also some memorable guest appearnces by the likes of lee majors, carl weathers, a young kyle chandler and kim delaney popping up in season 2.the three seasons were all very different, with the first being my favourite - and as this was filmed in hawaii it had an extra edge and looke that little bit grittier and more 'in-country' than the following seasons when they switched to filming at the old MASH set to save coststhe licence issues which prevent so many songs from featuring on dvd releases are silly - if the licencers forwent these up front fees, they would make money as people watching the show would go out and buy the various cd's - so it is essentially free advertising and promotion for their band by being featured! pity the music companies are greedy and want it both ways!obviously the studio has listened in this case and worked to resolve these issues, i remember signing two different online petitions which went to sony asking for the release including the original soundtrack!the only negative thing is the picture quality - quite simply, it is very, very poor - for the price which is obviously necessary to pay the music re-licensing, i expected better. i have some episodes on vhs from recordings made from TVS back in 1987, and on my still amazing top of the range JVC 960 vhs deck from the same era, these are actually better than the dvd's, even after being copied onto blank dvd-r discs. even my other half, who thinks anything is a good picture, said the picture was awful but 'it's your money'. obviously the decision was made to re-license the music as a priority as nobody would have bought it otherwise - i personally would preferred to have paid an extra £5 for a digitally re-mastered version with some 5.1 sound to boot. to be fair it was better on our old sony kve 29" super trinitron that i refuse to dispose of, despite its bulk and space hogging in our attic room, and still a more natural image than any HDTV available todady - but such is the nature of HDTV's that they show up any imperfection on old SD sources. With the poor masters used to produce this DVD set, I do not expect any potential blu-ray release to fare much better either.but, this is one boxset i cannot wait to go down in price before purchasing, i have waited long enough!it would be great to see the cast and producers at one of the regular uk tv conventions soon!

Great - but not as great as it should be
I have only watched this version on the new R2 dvd release with the full soundtrack so I cannot compare it to the previous R1 'muzak' versions, and I have to say I am halfway through and the writing / actors / direction etc are all really great and (yes!) the soundtrack especially is superb.HOWEVER, the picture quality is shocking (I have vhs videos with better clarity & colour) and the soundtrack is only in 2.0 stereo, not 5.1. I should also point out that I am watching it on a pretty decent mid-end home cinema set up, not a cr@ppy old cathode ray tv which may highlight some of the poorer aspects of the AV.So yes, you all must buy it because I NEED them to release seasons 2 & 3 as well (with full soundtracks obviously), but be prepared for the fact that it is a very old tv show and cannot compete with the AV quality of newer releases. You must all still buy it of course....do it now.

Awesome
Can't believe I've only just found out about this being released on region 2 and having the original soundtrack & I see season 2 is available now as well, will be snapping both that & season 3 when released, but season 1 will remain my most favourite season out of all 3.Having owned the region 1 US dvd season 1 box set for a few years, watched the episodes many times but without the original music it just wasn't the same, as I still had dvd recordings I made of the show from the FX channel I even used my editing skills to take the video from the region 1 dvd & muxed in the sound from my fx recordings, did I pretty good job there as well but I can now ditch those edits I made & have a proper dvd release with original soundtrack intact & I can't wait for this to arrive! To all who've moaned about the video quality, well what do you expect for a tv show made in the late 80s, I expect the video quality will be identical to the region 1 release and I was more than happy with the quality on that so I wont have any complaints about the video quality on this new reagion 2 release.Update : It seems I recieved one of the initial batches of this product as the episode `War lover` doesn't have the orignal music on it, have contacted Fabulousfilms by email about obtaining a fixed copy of disc 1, hoping to hear back from them soon.

Absolutely love this boxset!
I remember watching Tour of Duty way back in the 80's, and loved it! So I thought "why not buy the boxset and watch it time & time again"? So I did, and don't regret it one bit!

What complete idiot puts out a DVD set of grainy 80s tv footage WITHOUT subtitles.
The title says it all. Well worth the wait if you like an birnt soundtrack consisting of explosions, gunfire and mumbling.

Forgotten how good this series is
My wife and I watched Tour of Duty when we were in college. I doubt she liked it that much, but I sure did. I'm glad it's available on DVD. It is definitely worth searching out these older DVD releases with the original music. I got one DVD from Netflix, with the current-release, generic music, and it really isn't as good as the original show.Note that these DVDs are not Region 1. I think they are Region 2. My DVD player would not recognize them, but my DVD-ROM drive had no trouble at all.
