Liszt: Piano Concertos Nos.1 & 2 (Virtuoso series)

Excellent performance

The conventional wisdom is that the Ozawa/Zimerman recording of the Liszt concertos is the one to have, and it is indeed fine. This one, from 1976, is every bit as good -- in fact, given the expressiveness of Guilini's accompaniment, one might consider it better than the competition. Berman plays with lovely tone, limpid or warm as required, and the First Concerto, with its blend of lyricism and playfulness is quite wonderful. The Second Concerto is a more enigmatic piece, darker in its expressiveness, and with more transitions both between and within the movements that need to be made convincing in order to create the unity that the Concerto seems to seek. Berman and Guilini are fully alive to this, and the performance engaged me from first to last. It's not as immediately likeable a piece as the First, but when it's played as well as it is here, the listener is captivated. The solo playing from the orchestra deserves mention -- it's just beautiful. Nice work from Sinopoli in the fillers, but note that an earlier issue of these concerto recordings -- on DG Galleria -- has Berman providing the filler beautifully with some items from his recording Of "Annees de Pelerinage.' For my money, that's a preferable coupling.

Effectivement, cet album vaut surtout pour l'interprétation époustouflante de Berman dans les concertos avec Giulini grand accompagnateur. Et Berman n'oublie pas d'être subtil et délicat tout en étant d'une virtuosité ébouriffante. Très bons compléments par Sinopoli avec le Philharmonique de Vienne.

Lazar Berman è tra i miei pianisti preferiti, e anche in questa interpretazione dà il meglio di sé sotto la guida di un altro grande della musica come Carlo Maria Giulini. Penso che data l'elevata qualità dell'interpretazione e il basso costo del cd questo sia un buon acquisto per ogni amante della musica e collezionista o per chiunque si avvicini all'ascolto della musica "classica".

je me demande encore pourquoi Liszt a longtemps été traité avec un peu de mépris par rapport à Chopin. sa virtuosité flamboyante peut-être.
