Fantagraphics Studio Edition: Charles Burns' Black Hole (The Fantagraphics Studio Edition) Hardcover – December 12, 2017

Breathtaking large scale (1 to 1, I think) Charles Burns' masterpiece. If you ever needed one book in you home, this is it. It could even double as a table judging by it's size! Beautifully disturbing (as usual), Charles Burns, American artist has produced something that approaches fine art in it's size and scope of it's unsettling story. Something I'll always want to show my guests just for it's uniqueness.

Just stunning. If you love Black Hole, or if you just want to experience Burns' work up close and marvel in each brush stroke, this book is a no-brainer. It's huge, heavy, and gorgeous from cover to cover.

I am a huge obsessive Burns fan but this is really disappointing. Yes it's enormous, yes it's beautiful, yes you get to see a splodge of white-out here and there and a few cut and paste marks but ultimately it leaves out nearly half the book (no explanation given). Did Burns sell them to private collectors? Did he feel they should never have been there in the first place? Doubtful. There is absolutely nothing you haven't seen already in Black Hole but plenty you did see that has been excised.There is one thing this book gives you that you otherwise wouldn't have and that is many high quality pages of artwork suitable for cutting out and framing.

Edition absolument magnifique (mais malheureusement partielle) du chef d'oeuvre de Burns. Les planches sont reproduites à la taille réelle (et elles sont nettement plus grandes que la version intégrale) et l'impression laisse entrevoir les retouches faites par le dessinateur, c'est presque comme avoir les originaux à la maison. Découpage et dessin chirurgicaux, on comprends mieux pourquoi il a mis autant d'années à terminer cet ouvrage.Clairement indispensable pour tous les fans de Black Hole.Exemplaire acheté ici car nettement moins cher que chez l'éditeur (désolé pour eux).Livraison et emballage impeccables.

Seeing this work in this format at this size left me weak at the knees. The fact Amazon.ca is giving this away from $79CAN is a gift you shouldn't pass up. I picked up my copy for $63! ordering it when it was temporarily out of stock! The book production is stunningly beautiful and it is packed in a sleek white box with a sticker on the front. There is nothing printed on the cover aside from the illustrations. The book contains several complete chapters from the graphic novel. There is no pagination. It is very much like flipping through Charles Burn's portfolio. If you're a fan, you owe it to yourself to get this at this price before it's gone.

Cheguei a pensar, antes da entrega, em cancelar o pedido: "Mas por que uma edição especial.. Estou satisfeito com a minha edição convencional!". UAU, que coisa fantástica e mágica repassar aquelas páginas em originais repletos de textura e vibração. Lamentei não ter adquirido uma segunda edição para arrancar algumas páginas e emoldura-las para decorar minha casa. Obrigado, Fantagraphics.

Dass man auch Comiclesern den geliebten Stoff mehrfach verkaufen kann, ist nichts neues, und ehrlich gesagt stoße ich mich auch gar nicht daran, wenn ich für mein Geld echten Mehrwert gegenüber einer früheren Ausgabe bekomme. Dies ist hier leider nur sehr bedingt der Fall.Zunächst die Fakten: Riesenformat 50x37x3 cm, starker Halbleineneinband, (einfacher) Schutzkarton mit integrierter Knautschzone, gutes Papier, guter (Vierfarb-)Druck, Fadenheftung. Blättert man das Buch auf (Obacht: Im Bus oder im Bett wird das kaum gehen), sieht man die brillanten Seiten aus "Black Hole" endlich mal in einem adäquaten Format reproduziert; es ist kaum fassbar, warum die reguläre Ausgabe so winzig sein muss. Vorgestellt werden einige ausgewählte Kapitel (meist vollständig) sowie einige Cover.Genau hierin liegt das Problem: Warum nicht komplett? So toll die Seiten auch sind, es bleibt bei Schmeckhappen. Klüger wäre es gewesen, die ganze Serie nach und nach im Großformat vorzulegen; es muss ja nicht gleich so riesig wie im vorliegenden Fall sein. Und noch etwas fällt auf: Es ist zwar sehr schön, dass die ursprünglichen Scans nicht einfach hochskaliert wurden, wie es bei den sehr enttäuschenden Moebius-Bänden in der Reihe "30x40" - z.B.  Le garage hermétique  - der Fall ist. Aber die vorliegenden Seiten zeigen einfach bloß, dass Burns ein besessener Perfektionist ist, der seine Seiten so akurat wie möglich herstellt. Selten, dass einmal etwas überklebt wird oder gar - ach, Du meine Güte! - eine Seite auseinandergeschnitten werden muss. Erkenntnisgewinn: Null. Ehrlich gesagt hätte man sich die Mühe auch sparen können, zumal es keine zusätzlichen Artikel, Interviews oder ähnliches gibt.Viel aufschlussreicher und spannender sind hingegen die Originalblätter von Robert Crumb, wie sie sich in diesem großartigen Katalog finden:  Crumb . Man kann konkret nachvollziehen, wie der Mann arbeitet, und erhält richtig einen Blick hinter die Kulissen. Hier lohnen Mühe wie Anschaffung; bei der Fantagraphics Studio Edition dagegen kaum. Zumal die Frage offen bleiben muss, wo man mit dem Ding abbleibt; in ein Regal geht es todsicher nicht. Le garage hermétiqueCrumb
