Love love love (spoilers ahead)
So I watched the movie first and after falling head over heals for the movie and later buying it on DVD I just had to read the book because I know how books and movies can be different. This was so amazing. It wasn't really much different from the movie although some parts were left out or edited all together. One part that really bothered me that the movie messed up was the fact that they made it seem as if Jack and Ma were in the hospital for a short period of time but in actuality they spent a great deal there in the book and that was where she ultimately attempted suicide and not at home as in the movie. But i have to applaud the author for how well she captured Jack. It felt like I was reading in the mind of an actual 5 year old and I know that's hard to accomplish.

Normal or Hell?
It was hard to get used to the five year old first person style at first, but I am glad I stuck it out. I don't think this would have been as effective written any other way. It shows how resilient kids are and that their normal and our normal can be so different. What might be hell for an adult is just normal for a child and with love and the right caregiving, they can grow up and be ok, no matter where they are raised.

What a great book.
This is an unusual story about two people, mother and son. They are being held captive by a deranged man. I don't want to spoil the book for anyone, but it's just so real feeling. This book kept me enthralled from home to Africa.

I loved this book
I loved this book. It is written from a 5 year olds perspective, so once you get used to his language - you will love it!
