The World of Captain John Smith

What a great series.Foster surveys a period of history with engaging stories meant for children. Each book comes with a black and white illustration introducing the characters. This is not historical fiction.We have all the books in the series. One suffered liquid damage and I promptly purchased a new copy. These have a permanent place in my library.In comparison, I am not a huge fan of A Child's Story of America. It is a drag to read aloud. I like Our Island Story and the immense detail in the Guerber (revised by Miller) Story of the Greeks, Story of the Romans, etc. We've read the Famous Men of series published by Memoria, but I didn't like them as much as Guerber's. Memoria's series is much easier, however.

Genevieve Foster presents history in a horizontal fashion that is just simply great story telling. I recommend all of her "World of" series. You get to follow the life of John Smith, while at the same time going learning about many of the other important events and people who shaped history. Included are Queen Elizabeth, Bloody Mary, Galileo, Pochahontes, Shakespear, King James, Ben Johnson, The Pilgrims, John Winthrop and the Puritans and many more. It is interesting to learn about the settlement of America.

I have used this book for five years in a myriad of ways in grades 4 through 8. All have enjoyed it because of its "storytelling" of personal aspects of important people in history and their relationships with those during their times. The pictorial time lines are a wonderful tool!

all of this author's books are amazing! this book was in great shape and shipped quickly. i consider these books great material for teaching history to children.

This book is good for Social Studies & History for nearly any age. No textbook required. :) Beautiful Feet Curriculum
