Voted one of The Guardian 's top 10 best crime books of all time and one of the best true crime books ever written according to Stylist Shirley Pitts, the eldest of six children was born upside down on 24 November 1934. Her 'career' began by thieving bread off doorsteps and coal from coal carts. Her father's bungled attempts at black marketeering and her dipsomaniac mother's inadequacies made Shirley resolve not only to be a first-class thief but also the best mother her six children could wish for. Before she died Shirley told her story to Lorraine - the story of a generous, brave and beautiful woman with a huge sense of fun and a love of life. Review: Well written account - Shirley Pitts led a life of crime and was notoriously good at shoplifting and also indulged in other illegal scams throughout her life. Brought up in South London I don't think Shirley knew anyone who wasn't involved in some sort of illegal activity. I suppose making a living as a shoplifter wasn't frowned upon as she was from a criminal subculture. A very readable book with lots of dry humour and it's share of sadness too . Review: Relax - Loved

often think of her with love.
takes you back to the extreme poverty of those times of which I lived through. she was a very kind lady she stayed with us when she was on the run from police. I never knew who she was, she spent days cutting out pictures from an old Rupert the Bear book and making a flour and water paste to stick them on the wall of our grotty flat.to make our life a less bit grim! often think of her with love.

Funny and gripping read. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down. characters just come alive and it feels like you have lived this life and known all involved in Shirley's life.

Too many typos
Story seemed to have too many holes. I was left feeling unsympathetic to the subject who to me stole so much and wasted the proceeds of her ill gotten gains. On another level I was riveted as her stomping ground was familiar to me having grown up in that part of London myself.
