Incredibly sad but moving!
There are parts of this book that were very upsetting but it was one that I found interesting and really enjoyed. This part of history is something that's very important to be aware of and something to remind us of how fortunate we are.

A totally thought provoking read. Horror in its truest form
A book to give you nightmares. Difficult to really understand the suffering of those at Auschwitz but this book brings you closer than most others I’ve read. Maybe because it’s written by a survivor. How could it ever have been allowed to happen? Some of the torturous things the Nazis did to the innocent people were beyond most peoples imagination. Olga Lengyel doesn’t hold back too much with her descriptions. A book of true horror yet hard to put down.

Well-written
I really liked how well written this book is, and the fact that it was first written just after the Holocaust. Olga's personal story is tragic, and it's interesting because it's also written from the perspective of an older woman. I really recommend this book

Brutally honest
I've read lots of books about Auschwitz, this to me was the most shocking...goes into detail about the torture these souls had to endure, I read this book very quickly, couldn't put it down, very well written & very hard to read in parts.

Five Chimneys
Whilst one cannot deny the atrocities of Auschwitz and other camps, sadly I do not feel that Olga captures the reality at all. I cannot decide if she wrote this way purposefully to protect the reader or that perhaps she really had become cold & insensitised from her experience! The book lacks emotion and feeling and is written if almost by someone else telling the story of others/history.It is written in a way that goes back and forth in time and also appears to be written a large amount on facts/opinions found out after the war was over.I do not wish to put this individual's horrendous experience down in any way. But she contradicts and repeats herself a fair amount. For me there are much better true accounts of the holocaust out there which reflect accurately the harrowing human pain and experiences.Nevertheless, it was still interesting and a quick book to read.

Beyond belief!!
I truly have no idea why I wanted to read thus book other than the fact that I regretted not visiting Auswitz when I was in Poland. This book is extremely well written and cgrinucles in graphic detail the horrors of inhumanity in the camps. It is surreal and unbelievable the accounts of the treatment of the internees. Death, experiments and every imaginable horror is described in great detail. Not for the faint of heart but.......

Inspiring and crushing
Olga Lengyel writes at the beginning of this book that she feels herself in part responsible for the deaths of her parents and sons. Although I cannot absolve this wonderful woman of her self imposed guilt, I can say that, in my opinion, she was absolutely in no way responsible for this action. The SS was responsible. The Nazis were responsible. Their daughter and mother was most certainly not responsible. This brave woman was there to bear witness to a level of inhumanity that will forever remain unsurpassed. I found her courageous and daring despite her overwhelming fear of her jailers. She was determined to live and tell the world what she saw with her own eyes. She could have had an easier time. She was intelligent, beautiful, and did not allow her fear to overwhelm her common sense. She took advantage of none of that. She bore the mantle they imprisoned her with and in the end she refused to break. I wish I had, the world had, just a thin sliver of the extraordinary courage this woman possessed until the day she died. Her legacy lives on. I will certainly never forget her nor the horror she repeatedly warned the world about.

Five Chimneys
What an astounding book! I have read many accounts of the holocaust, but this one captures the essence of human cruelty more than any of the ones I have read. It should be read by everyone, especially those who, today, deny the Holocaust ever happened. Mans inhumanity to man. I appreciate Olga telling her story. It would have been hard to relive it but she wrote with honesty and humanity.

incredible work
Unbelievable how much endurance she had to survive such hell on earth. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us! I’m so impressed with your ability to survive and memorize such unbelievable tragedies to share with world what happened to you and all those poor souls that were killed by those evil monsters.
