Hope It Never Gets Used - But Would Work!
I purchased this for my son who is getting involved with ice fishing this year. Though, even at a young age, he is an outdoor expert. But you can never be too careful in the wild. Something he understands, especially being new to the sport. So thought this would be a valuable product for his use. I was very pleasantly surprised after opening the box. Buyer beware, I thouhgt the plastic would be weak and really didn't know what to expect, but every little bit towards safety counts. Was I wrong! The pick handles themselves are extremely well built. They feel very strong in the hand, and an large enough to be effective for anyone's use, big or small hands. The points themselves, I could hunt small game with these things. Be very careful in using these and remember what they are designed for. Not a toy to play around with. Very well built! The Teather cable between the two handles does leave a little to be desired. I will probably replace the somewhat weak plastic-coated small gauge wire with paracord. This will also offer an opportunity to create a loop or other type of holder to which you can attach this device to your person. Last thing you want to to be unable to quickly locate and use this product in case of emergency. The whistle itself is effective. Better than nothing, but again it is plastic. Should do the job better than gasping for air and calling out after being in cold water. But again, doesn't really have the ultimate secure connection to the body. Easily modifiable, but something to consider during the purchase. All in all, highly recommend the product. Matter of fact, my son told me he saw a video where someone uses this product and intentionally jumps into water to see how it works. Worked extremely well. So there you go!Give it a try. At this price point you should probably consider it a must have for any ice fisherman or other related activity (ice skating, etc.).

A must have for early/late ice safety.
If you like fishing late or early ice when conditions are potentially more sketchy, these are an absolute must. They're not a bad idea to have on you any time of year, actually. Also useful for anyone who participates in other activities out on frozen lakes such as skiing or skating. The entire point of these is simply to give you something to dig into the ice with to pull your body weight out should you fall through the ice. The points are retractable to prevent you from hurting yourself when they aren't actually in use.I've owned a different pair of these for around a decade and I've never needed to use them, but just having them makes me a lot more confident when venturing out on ice that I'm not totally comfortable on. These are identical to the other pair that I own.The only knock I'd give these is that you can find comparable versions for about 5 bucks less from reputable manufacturers, but these do also include a whistle so there's that. Either way, just spend the small amount of money and get a set of these that could potentially save your life.

the cord is much longer than it would seem, they are very sharp and stab ice easy, do indeed float
I decided to give these 4 stars because the handles doo feel cheap and I had another set of these that I dropped off the roof of my truck onto the pavement and one went pop and made a cracking sound and one no longer floats. other than that they are pretty good. they are rather fragile them seem to dropping them which to me seems to be a problem since I have fallen through the ice and have experience. The spikes are indeed sharp and they are easy to grab and deploy and they will indeed save your life but the plastic handles in the cold are prone to cracking if they take a hard fall onto something hard. having fallen through the ice and slammed my chest into the edge of the hole that opened up after I fell right where I keep my ice picks it might be a problem if you run into that same situation. overall the picks themselves are sharp and strong enough to actually pull yourself out of the ice and the whistle is a nice touch but not really a good quality whistle but still a nice thought. they are comfortable to hold as well and easy to grip onto with wet gloves. overall lost a star since they are fragile in the cold where they are designed to be used if dropped on hard surfaces but other than that they are good and will be capable of saving your life.

I don't ice fish, or ice skate on rivers/lakes. But...
...a few years ago I was at my sister's place for Christmas, and their basset hound wandered out on their 200 foot pond and fell through a thin spot at the center. We heard him howl, so I ran out, grabbed a plastic kayak and a shovel from the garage, and started breaking a path through the ice with the shovel to get to the dog. That house of hers was out in the country. There was no way that any emergency services were going to arrive fast enough to do any good.My improvised technique worked...we rescued the pooch, and I stayed in the kayak. But what if I'd dumped myself out, and gone through the ice myself? I was completely unprepared.A set of ice picks like this item might have been essential to my surviving. I had the only kayak. My elderly parents weren't going to venture out on the ice themselves...at least, not without going through...to try to rescue me. My sister wasn't there...she'd gone to the store. There was no extension ladder available. So now I have these ice picks. Like their marketing information says, they're a cheap insurance policy. I hope I never have a need to use them.Recommended.
