The Matrix of Race: Social Construction, Intersectionality, and Inequality

“Out beyond the field of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is another field!
“Out beyond the field of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is another field. I’ll meet you there”, said Rumi the Sufi poet. When you get there you’ll also find Rodney Coates with co-authors Abby Ferber and David Brunsma! There is a strident racism increasing it’s hateful voice and ugly (sometimes deadly) behavior. In this remarkable book scholar and equity authority Rodney Coates reaches for a way to depolarize those of us who are not militantly radicalized and who have a deep desire to connect and to accept the multi-ethnicity that surrounds us.It’s not black and white which themselves are non-scientific “racial” social constructs invented in Europe in the 15th century. They invented this false construct to justify colonialization and notions of the superiority of one race over another! Nobody is black, white, red, or yellow! We are all shades of brown! In a recent equity event that I attended the presenter was what I would call a “true believer or fundamentalist” about such things as micro-aggressions regardless of context, etc. Thus polarization, in seeing each other and especially ALL “whites” as the enemy, was enhanced.Rodney Coates and co-authors invite us to a world where we can talk without accusing, where we can learn from the other-to a field where, “Our souls can lie down in that grass” (Rumi), and have a genuine exchange, not as enemies but as humans.

Great book!
Great book for my race and ethnicity class, it has a lot of important information from the past and present which is good for college students to understand the concepts better when your reading it.
