The Complete Works of Saint Cyprian of Carthage (Christian Roman Empire)

A Great Collection of Writings from a Father of the Church.
Saint Cyprian of Carthage, who lived in the 200s, had a great reputation then and ever since, and his writings are still admired. This collection of writings provides his essays and letters. His essays are notable, vigorous and potent. Saint Jerome said his writings are "full of sweet beauty, charming simplicity, fascinating language, and masterly eloquence." Executed in the Roman Empire because of his Christianity, he is a martyr of the Church. All the works of this volume are reprinted from volume 5 of the set "the Ante-Nicene Fathers." This earlier collection of his works, in fact, is available on the web: go to "New Advent," then click on Church Fathers. "The Complete Works of Saint Cyprian of Carthage," however, has an an original introduction that covers his life and efforts, that I liked.

Great commentary
Saint Cyprian really reminds me a lot of Paul in the New Testament and Philip Campbell really pinpoints good subjects in his commentary

Excellent edition, first class.
It would be somewhat unethical if I talked about the forward, so therefore I will speak with respect to the rest of the book, namely the bit that this is all about. It is an absolutely fantastic, well arranged, easily readable collection of St. Cyprian's readings, all in one spot. Many times books such as these are facsimile reprints, or else have tiny font and are poorly arranged. Philip Campbell has done an admirable job in both his arrangement of the text and the readability. The only way one can arrive at something better than this work is to obtain the writings of St. Cyprian in the original Latin.

Helpful compendium
Great compendium of Cyprian's works; foot notes are very helpful in situating Cyprian's teaching within the larger body of Catholic truth.
