Awesome camp tool
This definitely makes splitting wood easier. It holds an edge well and is easy to sharpen. You’ll have no problem driving heavy duty steel tent stakes into the ground either. The black coating started wearing off after the first use. It doesn’t bother me as it’s a tool that’s meant to be used. If that’s something that bothers you may want to get the uncoated version.

A great product. made in the USA.
This small splitting maul is fantastic! I got the one with the rubber handle because I own a few Estwing tools and love their durability. The sharp edge on the blade penetrates the toughest wood.

Yep
You know that dude with a man bun who uses some ridiculous folding hatchet from Dick's Sporting Goods to split wood when camping? The guy who buys $100 hatchet that takes three swings to split a 6" pine log... Don't be that guy. This is the tool. Hatchets are for cutting, and they're pretty terrible at it. Hand saws will outperform them any day. This is a splitter. Its a sledge hammer with a blade. Its also coated in a superhuman epoxy lacquer because you can pretty much just leave it in water and the only that'll rust is the very tip of the blade. This is what you use to split logs next to the fire. You could also club a grizzly bear with it should the need arise. Blade is easy to sharpen. Split angle is perfect. Weight and balance are spot on. Best of all its an Estwing, so its an American made one-piece forged chunk of freedom steel. I've split literal cords of maple with this thing. Its a beast. Even comes with a nylon blade pouch. Buy once, never look back.

Great for campground firewood splitting.
I have quite a few hatchets and I love camping - even car camping! But buying firewood from the campground is guaranteed to be a smoky campfire experience. The wood is always green, unseasoned, and sometimes wet, with knots and curves that make it a pain to split. The only way to make a decent campfire without cheating (lighter fluid), is to process the logs down really thin. The Fireside Friend makes that a breeze. I use this small splitting maul to process the big knotty logs down to a more manageable size for my hatchet, and save myself time and frustration. Awesome tool for campfire prep!

High quality
Pricey but estwing is always great quality. Not quite as useful as i had hoped for splitting but it has its place for sure.

Simply the best
I have 3 of these that I simply love. It’s made to be heavy yet quite manageable for splitting firewood and large camp sledge hammering jobs. You wouldn’t want to backpack with it but for anything else, it is great. This is the leather-stack handle model with a protective black coating on the metal shaft and head which holds up to the wet Washington State weather very well. A little coat of Linseed Oil on the whole thing when you are done with the tool and it will look like new for many many years. Over time my oldest one has some minor wear in the metal coat but I use it several times each day since I heat my home with wood from Autumn through Spring. The model I carry in my pickup toolbox is the synthetic handle model and it is equally excellent for any job requiring a lot of persuasion. It rattles around in my pickup and still looks like new. These are made in Rockford, Illinois, USA which is why I have never had to deviate from owning this tool. All of Estwing products are great for the job & Made in The USA. Might as well buy the best!!

Friendly Axe!
Loving the axe. Be careful of the sharpness. I prefer to swing it using both of my hands. If chopping a wood that can't stand on its own then hold that piece using another piece of wood on the top. Also protect the sharp side by chopping on top of a tree stump.
