Jokers Wild
This volume contains in order Red Hood and the outlaws volumes 0,15 and 16 Teen Titans 16 Batman 17 and Red Hood and the outlaws volume 17 and 18 and is part of the wider Death of the Family ark that crosses all Bat family titles.I will not go to far into plot to stop spoilers but it kicks off with the zero issue which re-writes the origin story of Jason Todd, this is not a great change to what it was before except in one aspect(which I can't tell you about) but is covered with the now trademark offbeat humour of the series but also a sense of melancholy as Jason looks back over his own past, parent issues don't even begin to describe it.After that it's back to the main story and it takes on straight from the end of the last volume, Jason's date Isabel has been given an overdose by the Joker and he has left Jason to take the blame and frankly from there it all goes downhill. Meanwhile Arsenal and Starfire have teamed up with the Teen Titans who are looking for Tim Drake as the outlaws are looking for their own former Robin, now I could tell you more but I won't spoil the surprise, I'll just say it twists and turns as the Joker puts his plans into action as he plays his games with Jason and Tim, as a plus you get the conclusion of the Joker story but Roy, Kori and the Titans have no conclusion in this title, the story just kind of tails off. Also there are a couple of hints to the future, as a couple of very familiar villains are teased for a future confrontation. The main fault in this volume is it gets a bit lost in the main drama of the wider ark, the superb high notes of Jason Todd's backstory and the fallout after are negated slightly by the feel that the link to Batman overrides the momentum that has been built up so far in the series, also Roy and Kori get a bit side-tracked, Roy especially needs more limelight Arsenal as a character and hero has really grown on me as this series has grown, while it is Red Hood and.. we really need a Roy story soon, he gets his moments in this volume but I'd love to see more. The art is the other fault, it completely lacks consistency, which with a crossover story is to be expected, but still it's off-putting.There is a lot of good in this volume, the zero issue is very good and the last two issues dealing with the fallout really help cement Jason's place in the Bat family, the last page is extremely touching especially, some of what comes before does get a bit lost in the maelstrom, but there is enough here to like, where this volume is good it is very good but in other places it's robbed a little bit of it's identity. It also marks the end of Scott Lobdell run on this title which he has done a great job of making a team out of these three very different heroes and he has done a great job of building the foundation and generally producing a series that is a lot of fun but also packs a punch emotionally.

The best Red Hood so far.
With each issue Red Hood and Outlaws seems to get a little better though, still there is no clear plot or objective for the characters, the story simply doesn't grip you, making picking the book up again a chore. This volume sees Arsenal and Starfire teaming up with the Teen Titans fighting with homeless people in what seems to be a lazy attempt to fill in time whilst the Death of the Family story unfolds without them. The Teen Titans and the Outlaws combined fail to find their captive leaders who manage to escape thanks to the efforts of Batman instead, so their efforts were wasted.Jason Todd's back story is by far the best part and even dares to reveal new details to the canon. In an attempt by DC to sell more of their comics to the reader, not only is the Teen Titans featured but random pages of Raven and Deathstroke are too. This is fortunately the last volume written by Scott Lobdell so hopefully James Tynon can improve in Volume 4.
