These are unlike any other hard licorice candy I’ve eaten because they are Finnish Salty Licorice. While the licorice flavor is apparent, there is quickly a saltiness that could seem strong to some. Apparently, the intrigue of salty licorice is its ability to be both salty and sweet at the same time as a result of the ammonium chloride used in production. The package asks, “Too hot to handle?” but it isn’t really peppery or spicy, in my opinion. I think the saltiness may cause some to experience a tingling or burning sensation.It’s hard to guess whether most licorice fans will like this because it’s so different, but my guess is that they might be put off by the saltiness. My husband is a licorice fan, and he didn’t finish his first piece and doesn’t seem inclined to try it again. I think it should be approached as its own unique flavor with a licorice component to prevent disappointment that it’s not just licorice candy. The expiration date for the four 120g bags of loose candy that I received is 16 months in the future. The set also comes with a small “Scandylicious” clip to reseal the bags.

The flavor of these unique candies will be extremely polarizing to anyone who is not acclimated to them. Even if you like licorice, there's no guarantee you'll like these. They're a completely different flavor profile and they are dissimilar to any candy commonly sold in the US. Salmiak & Pepper candies are extremely salty, which is unlike most American black licorice candies.That said, definitely give these a try if the idea sounds appealing to you. If you grew up with these types of candies, you'll probably love these. The bags are not resealable, but there is a bag clip included so you can keep an opened bag fresh. These specific candies were made in Finland.
