no need to oil. from time to time i tighten it. haven't had no grinding. defective product?

Not really, it's made really nicely and the mechanism is real smooth so it hardly makes any sound at all. It would be pretty difficult to get it spinning really fast like you can do with a lot of spinners, so there's hardly any whirring sound. It's still fun, though, kinda goofy.

The ad has conflicting info. So, final answer please: is it made of stainless steel, or aluminum?

It's difficult to tell what the buttons are made of. The rest of it clearly attracts a magnet, indicating stainless steel. But the buttons (grips) are barely attracted to a magnet, which leads me to believe it's a mixture of stainless steel and aluminum, if that's possible. It's very sturdy, however. Also, in the double pendulum version, the pendulum is made of the same substance that the buttons are on the single pendulum, however the buttons on the double pendulum ARE aluminum, and the single pendulum on this one is definitely stainless steel. I think they made the right call in all the metal choices. They are both very well balanced.
