2018 release. Orgone takes on 13 funk and soul classics! Otis Redding, Funkadelic, The Meters, Aretha Franklin, Betty Wright, and Booker T are just a few of the artists Orgone cover on this mixtape collection with some help from friends as well! Expertly recorded and performed, you could make an argument for some of these being better than the originals, but we'll suffice it to say that it's a simply killer set from beginning to end! Orgone is from Los Angeles, California. The group's sound draws from 1960s and 1970s-era funk and soul. While several members of the band played together from the early 1990s, Orgone did not coalesce into a regular band until around 1999. After a 2001 debut release, the band added vocalist Fanny Franklin and she has remained as a full-time member, although much of their music is instrumental.

A great band hampered by overzealous vintage minded engineers.
The only thing that stops Orgone's music, albums and particularly this album from being eminently relistenable, is that they insist on lo-fi-ing their recordings to try and sound more vintage than they already do.Having seen them live, the real impact is live because all this studio filtering is missing. They are tight, muscular and fierce live and because of the insistence on tape saturation plugins on their recordings they don't reach their max potential.Bands like Funkedelic, whom they cover here, were never trying to sound lo-fi. They were always trying to sound as good as possible.Raw is not lo-fiPut in Cosmic Slop by Funkedelic and then listen to Orgone's version. The major distraction is how muddy Orgone's version is and how much funkier Funkedelic's version is...and it has nothing to do with funk-ability, it's that some engineer paid $1k for some plugins and insists on using them here. The band would have been better off recording the live-mix of a performance of these songs and just letting it be.Trust me, live they bring it. Here is over-production.

Top class soul and funk covers album.
A top album album as per usual from Orgone, but this time comprised of cover versions rather than original material. California's best soul and funk band are back with a vengeance.
