The Whispering Room: A Jane Hawk Novel
A**)
The Whispering Room by Dean Koontz
"Play manchurian with me""All right"So I was on a mission to read this series, but I think I am going to skip the next two books and read the ending next😂This second novel was sooooo so so so much better than the first Jane Hawk book. Koontz seems to have gotten the hang of writing a thriller, with short chapters that are told in the third person, and switch characters every time. It was truly quite hard to put down due to these switchy characters. The book also had a few true "oh SHIT" moments, such as with Luther's family. The book was still pretty long and there were a few erroneous parts that probably could have been left out.The lake resort was just creepy - what sadistic bastard came up with this! We have two branches of the main group now, who else is there besides Hendrickson? Also that's not a spoiler.I felt let down by the ending, it was a lot of build up.....for what actually happened with D. Who knows, some people may love it but I was like 😳 really? His descriptive Ianguage boggles my mind down too at times - for these reasons I did not 5 star the book. I felt like I could have read this book without reading the first one, and I can probably read the last one and feel pretty secure.

I just loved the first book in this series and couldn’t wait ...
Jane is back and in for a whole new set of troubles as she continues to hunt the men responsible for her husband’s suicide. In California, she is trying to make contact with a reporter who she thinks may be sympathetic to her cause. Meanwhile, in Minnesota, a school teacher turns her vehicle into a bomb and drives through the front of a hotel during a banquet that government officials are attending. The investigation is almost immediately taken over by the FBI and the local police chief is pushed aside, but he still has plenty of questions and will keep looking for answers even if he has to do it on his own time. His quest takes him to a tiny resort town in Kentucky where Jane’s leads have also taken her. Together, they discover the “Whispering Room” and continue to make inroads into the organization behind it all.I just loved the first book in this series and couldn’t wait to read this one. The third book has also been released recently and I’ve got my copy in hand. This book completely drew me into Jane’s world. Her name and picture are now being broadcast all over the world so she has to become even more conscientious with disguising herself. She is welcome nowhere and can’t be sure of anybody’s loyalty. This installment takes her across the country and back again and she meets up with some very interesting characters. The old man was a particular favorite of mine, proving that being 80 doesn’t mean you’re dead. I liked how the story moved back and forth between Jane and the investigation in Minnesota and then brought the two story lines seamlessly together in the end. Jane is making progress in her investigation. The question is: will she live to see it to the end?

Frighteningly realistic...
l highly recommend reading the five book action-thriller series featuring FBl Agent Jane Hawk - by the master of storytelling - Dean Koontz. The story's technoIogical premise not only seems possible, but possibly already available, when one considers what science, technoIogy, and pharmaceuticaI corporations have been suspected of doing the last few years - here and in other countries. The books' antagonists bring to mind today's powerful elitists, billionaires, and globalists - and their Agenda21, Agenda 2030, Agenda 2050...

A Very Good Installment in This Series
I liked Dean Koontz books & his writing style years ago. His plots have changed over recent years; some good, others not so much so.I like the Hawk series and liked the first installment enough to continue with it.Finishing book 2, I find it doesn’t grab me to the point I want to pick it up every chance I get, so I just continued reading to see what was around the next corner and how it would conclude. It’s very good; but not great. It’s well written and enough of a page turner. Some areas are predictable; others not so much. I did find it a bit too long. For instance, a section deals with the Sheriff’s family traveling out of town. That part of the book holds a weak connection to the plot and could have easily been deleted without affecting the novel. Though there are welcomed tongue in cheek humorous sections such as the “Wig man.”The characters are interesting and very well developed in typical Koontz fashion. The main protagonist, Jane Hawk, was very well developed by the end of the first book.Although I didn’t love it, I’ve already ordered the next one and will probably continue through all five. No love here, but I liked the first two a lot.

This book has all the things I love about a Koontz story
Book two of the Jane Hawk series (The Whispering Room) doesn't skip a beat! The Silent Corner ends and Jane has not a moment to take a breath. She is still on her mission to save humanity and the circle of evil just gets larger and larger. New subplots, new characters but same speed and forward motion. There were a few times at the end of the book that I just had to put it down because it was so intense.I was worried about Jane in the first part of the book -she seemed to be growing cold and distant from her morals but she was just doing what was necessary. The softer part of Jane emerges at times and her determination never waivers. This book has all the things I love about a Koontz story. The thrill, the always present good vs evil, the existential angst as a thread underneath. He brings in humor, love, strength and the nobility of people. We do not hear enough of these things in life so for me these are always welcome. Characters that she meets along the way will stay memorable. And the ending is a kicker! And yet not the end...I am so eager for the next Jane Hawk book.As always, Koontz takes care with what seems every word and every idea. He has once again shown himself for the master storyteller that he is. This time with a bit of Elli Weisel philosophy added. What a wonderful way to respect his fans.Thank you, NetGalley for my early chance

Not the best of Koontz
I went back to this more recent work having had a 5 year hiatus from Mr Koontz and his brilliant story telling. I was an avid fan. Whilst this series of books is well written, with the author's usual care to descriptive text, unfortunately the departure away from supernatural, horror or 'other worldly' stories just doesn't hit the mark for me. I've no doubt some will find this a good read, but for me, it's just another version of Jack Reacher, and maybe that was completely intentional by Dean Koontz. I spent ages reading thinking "come on just get to it" and sadly, the climax was an anti-climax for me.

From a fan
I’m a huge fan of Koontz and have read most of his work. I’ll be the first to admit that his novels deviate in quality. He has written some outstanding novels such as Phantoms, Watchers, Lightning, most of the Odd Thomas Series and Dragon Tears. But has also written some absolute stinkers such as The Darkest Night, Life Expectancy and My Heart Belongs to you. This is the second in the Jane Hawk series and is a thrill to read! The pace is fast and the story gripping. Yes Koontz has explored the idea of mind control before but still manages to make this feel fresh and unnervingly believable. A great read that had me hooked and I certainly look forward to the next instalment!

No. Just no.
It's not often that I say "Don't start a series part way through", but this has to be one of those books. And quiet how Dean Koontz was allowed to get away with it irritates me. His editors should have said "No, just no."This book starts assuming that you're going to believe a lot of smouldering horse do-do about nano-bots, and how they can impact human behaviour. Maybe this was better set up in the first book of the series, because it wasn't set up well here.Anyway, there's this FBI agent trying to stop the nano-bots taking over the world, and battle the fact that people in authority want that to happen. She is phenomenally lucky in that every "regular individual" believes her craziness, and I mean literally everyone, their wives, children, dogs, and inanimate objects they own.No one ever has that much luck. The most irritating is that there isn't a satisfactory conclusion to the book either, but that shouldn't be surprising, this is a 6 book series, and the book 1 to book 2 was as clunky as heck. So, in short, profoundly irritating.

Excellent
Part two of the series delves deeper into the scary world of mind control and the arrogance that demands it.Jane Hawk is a determined and courageous character who is on the trail of the villains, whose collective is likened to every agent of control with its corruption and arrogance in today's world - so real it's more terrifying than any horror story and so believable because we only have to look around to see that it's virtually true on so many levels. There are some superb characters she meets along the way, as well as some despicable ones. Luther also plays a major role and it will be interesting to see where that leads. The descriptions are rich alongside some great dialogue in parts.Very enjoyable, if disturbing, and I am looking forward to the last part, although, I may have to wait until it is cheaper next time.Highly recommended.
