How reliable is this device through a powered usb hub? i've experienced signal drops with competing devices through a powered usb 3 hub.

Do not use this through a hub, it needs all the power and data bandwidth it can get. Use directly with a USB port, not a hub.

Can i plug in a thumb drive usb to display photos through the hdmi to a tv?

Thumb drives or any related devices can not be connected to the usb port. The usb port on the capture device is strictly for connecting to a computer using streaming software (such as OBS studio) for example. Can also be used for hooking up a camera (as long as camera has an hdmi OUT port) then wiring to the hdmi in on the capture device. I never tested it on ios/android devices as I don't know if there is any software that will work. In order to display photos to a tv (that is if tv does not have a usb port itself), you will need a device with a hdmi out to connect to the tv. Such devices as cameras, camcorders, computers. Tablets and "Streaming" devices can do the same but again they must have an hdmi out and a "usb host" port in order to display photos to your tv.

How does one get line level audio into the capture card... say, from a mixing console?

I have this same device. You can hook up a microphone to the input (i don't recommend using for anything else). And yes you can hookup speakers and/or headphones to the device. The labeled audio ports on the capture device are as labeled.
