About Us

Thought provoking, emotional story about the circuitous nature of love.
First, I have to say something about the low-rated comments of some who disliked this film. I would venture a guess that they are fairly young, and perhaps have not yet experienced the challenges and joys of the depth, comittment and fluidity of a loving relationship. That's just a personal hunch and I needed to get it out there. If we're very fortunate and open, perhaps we get that kind of "true love" just once in a lifetime. Because it ends doesn't mean it was a bad thing, or if that's what we take from it, maybe it was NOT the real one, and there's that to look forward to. End of editorial."About Us" is a quiet, gentle film about two young students, Diego and Matheus. The story unfolds from the mind of Diego as he writes a screenplay about his time with Matheus, and dedicates it to the very best in what they had together. We see a lot of the good times, with hints of potential problems in the future. Diego is outgoing, while Matheus is more introverted. Diego is positive and expressive, and Matheus is more the home-body, with occasional bouts of depression, due in part to the suicide of his brother years before. We get to see where Diego gets his bouncy and open personality when his mother comes for a visit, exuding a lot of warmth and a little spice that embarrasses even Diego. But it's a welcome break from the quiet tone of the movie, and comes just when we need it, because the sadness of a waning relationship takes over the story after that. Diego plans for his future, but he holds it from Matheus. This appears to be the first real love either has had, so they have not yet learned from past mistakes and how to deal with the crisis.Oddly, it's not a depressing film at all, but rather wistful and romantic. By the time we get to the ending, Diego has told his story to the best of his ability, admitting that neither he or Matheus were as "perfect" as he wrote them to be. His dedication is to the memory of their time together, with its ups and downs along with the process of mutual and individual growth. His point in making the film is to stress that love is what it is, and what we make of it and the choices we bring to the relationship. He believes that a "love of my life" relationship isn't always successful, based on the time, circumstances and life experiences each has to offer. But he believes that it can take several lifetimes for those lovers to be, finally, in the right place at the right time, and the personal baggage of each has been accounted for, and this time around it all works."About Us" is beautifully acted and directed. The two actors seem to develop their chemistry more deeply as time goes by, and we see the fun, trust and love each has for the other until the issues of dreams, plans and uncertainty begin to creep in. They seem very real, and at their best moments, they are in complete sync with one another. This is where the director shines, because he has nurtured and coaxed the actors into being comfortable and expressive with each other. The screenplay is not overloaded with unnecessary words, and the subtitles work fairly well. One more round of proof-reading for tenses and pronouns would have been better, but we don't really miss much because we get an almost voyeuristic look into the hearts and minds of Diego and Matheus.By all means, read the reviews before making up your mind. I hope I have provided another insight and point of view. My belief is that it's everyone's right to offer their opinion. But if they're going to write a review, why not explain why they liked/disliked a movie? Regardless, please take a chance on "About Us". It offers a lot of hope, and who doesn't need hope?

Comprehensive story-telling
This was not a coming of age film between teen lovers. It's a retrospective story about the love that evolved between two young men who fell in love and and never stopped loving. It is told without haste, and closely mirrors the reality of life and love as two people mature and follow their dreams. The two actors were credible, and the chemistry between them was entirely credible. The cinematography was quite good. It's a story that demands a second chapter.

DOESN'T ADD UP
Although the two actors are charming, the film doesn't really explore the complexity of their relationship. They are in love, as demonstrated in scene after scene, devoted, married and then suddenly it's over. Conflicts are barely hinted at and rarely discussed. The narrator passes the buck at the end by talking about "timing" and "other lives" but that doesn't begin to explain why they had absolutely no contact after they separated, especially since they seemed to acknowledge each other's dreams and were so completely in love. One reviewer said that the people who didn't like the movie must be too young and inexperienced,. Well, I must be too old and have seen too much. Not that I believe that love conquers all but neither is love a faucet that can be instantly shut off. Did the narrator learn anything from this relationship? Not that I could tell. At least there wasn't another suicide. Or maybe there was...

Simple and Beautiful
Chances are for those who did not like 1) you've never been in true love before. 2) if you didn't understand the creativity of the way it was filmed, then stick with Star wars and Marvel movies. 3) watch it again in when you are a little older (or Mature). The one part I wasn't very fond of was the casting of the mother; she was a bit off and not really believable. But she wasn't part of the idea or intent other than her sons reactions.

Confusing
Maybe it's best not to read this review before seeing the movie because I wouldn't want to affect anyone's enjoyment of it. I was sad to see that Mauro Carvalho and Thiago Cazado didn't repeat the magic their collaboration had worked in creating the wonderful movie 'Cousins.' Diego and Matheus have fallen deeply in love with each other, but then the course of their relationship is perplexing. Why does Matheus inexplicably react to Diego's decision to pursue the career that he knew was Diego's dream, by refusing to go with him? That's a big part of why this story made no sense. Also a mystery is why so much of the movie had to take place in black and white and in the dark. It just seemed like a director's gimmicks. Such a disappointing film.

A beautifully told, non-cliched lgbtq love story
Wow, I really loved this film. Very well acted and beautifully filmed, it tells a loving, wistful story of love between two young men. No angels or villains as we so often see in lgbtq films, just a slice of life that really is believable and thoughtful. I found it very moving, and highly recommend this film.

Sweet characters. Hopeless movie.
A young film maker plans a film about his first great love, and this movie is that film. Two sweet, attractive young men fall in love, commit to eternal mutual loyalty, romp in the woods, have pillow fights and otherwise canoodle. Then, after a considerable time living together, one of them decides to leave Brazil for four years at Californian film school. End of the relationship. The end. These are sweet guys but there is no real dramatic evolution, no explanation why the film maker cannot go to school in Brazil or why his partner cannot go to California. There appears to have been no attempt by either party to keep their love alive. The film contains one embarrassingly crass scene when one of the lover's mothers (played by an actress who can be no more than ten years older than they are supposed to be) visits. If this was a first year film school project one would hail the budding talent but it isn't and it has little to commend it.

About us
A bit lacking in dramatic content, & some sequences were so dark that they were almost invisible, but a charming but sad story about how a great love between 2 young men is destroyed by a lack of trust, & possibly some jealousy, when Diego starts to do some filming with someone else.
