The P.H. Coate family has specialized in willow cultivation since 1819. They have been producing premium quality artists' vine charcoal from willow grown on the Somerset Levels, Stoke Saint Gregory in Southwest England for over thirty years. Plantation willow cultivation is part of the rich heritage of the Somerset Levels, stretching back for hundreds of years. A special combination of unique environmental conditions and tried and trusted traditions enable the Coate family to produce a truly unique fine art charcoal. Since Coate's produces and processes their own raw materials, they are able to select only the best willow rods ensuring consistently high quality charcoal. Coate's Willow Charcoal is non-compressed and burned from rods left in their raw round shape and diameter. It is very soft and velvety, and has a beautiful deep black hue especially favored by artists. This is one extra large stick of very soft Willow Charcoal by Coates. The stick is approximately 5-1/8" long and 3/4" thick. Perfect for large scale drawings and gesture drawing!

I been using Coates willow charcoal for over ten years now and used them to make hundreds of life drawings (I like to think I helped make it popular in my area). I think it take times to find the right stick of charcoal out of the box that has that "magical stroke" against my paper. Love the stuff. My only criticism is that when I first used Coates charcoal years ago it seem to be much richer and creamer.Click the link to check out some drawings I've done with Coates.[...]
