Once again, Janice Preston kept me gripped with the emotion between the hero and heroine from start to finish. I love the world she's created in all her books and it's a joy to see familiar characters from her other books play supporting roles in this one. In fact, Harriet, the heroine in this book, appeared in From Wallflower to Countess as the hero's former mistress so I really enjoyed reading her story here. I actually found it painful to read about her past - how her first love, Benedict Poole, had broken her heart, leaving her to face an unhappy marriage. Thankfully, Benedict gets the chance to redeem himself here and prove himself a worthy match for Harriet. My favourite moment? I can never resist a masquerade ball!

I know it''s been said before countless times but I could not put this down. Reading it was an emotional rollercoaster with a VERY happy ending. The hurt between the two main characters crackled off the page eclipsed only by the sexual tension between them.

A gripping story full of heart-ache and sexual tension.
Once again, Janice Preston writes a gripping story full of well-drawn and believable characters you really care about. You are drawn into a situation full of heart ache and sexual tension between two ex-lovers, Harriet and Benedict, that fate and treachery have pulled apart. In a multi-stranded plot, where the threat of scandal is always hovering over Harriet's life, the author keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting for, hoping for, a happy ending. But such is her skill, it is far from certain that all will be revealed and and ancient mis-understandings will be explained.Incidentally it is good to meet again some lovely people from her previous stories and catch up with their lives.

Sparkling dialogue
This is Janice Preston’s fourth Regency novel and I am amazed that each of her plots is so different. In this novel, we return to a minor character from her second novel ‘From Wallflower to Countess,’ Harriet, the widowed Lady Brierley, and a character from her third novel, ‘Return of Scandal’s Son,’ Benedict Poole. As the saying goes, Harriet and Benedict have a ‘history.’ As youngsters they fell deeply in love, but their elders conspired to keep them apart. With each believing the other was the betrayer, when they meet again, sparks begin to fly. As always, the dialogue between Harriet and Benedict sparkles as they circle warily round each other. In addition, Harriet’s controlling stepson tries to get the spirited Harriet to conform to the stereotypical retiring widow, something she is not prepared to do. I loved catching up with characters and learning of their lives as they have moved on. One feels like they have become friends. I do hope this trend continues.
