RegattaMens Yewbank Waterproof Insulated Jacket
E**R
A size down as compared to made in UK outdoor garments (but half size up compared to Asian made.)
Short Version - Good but not quite excellent on account of small size. Very Good features. If in doubt get next size up. Would have given 4 stars but reluctantly increased to 5 stars as it is very good value and for the Seller, Run Charlie for rapid dispatch and now free return of the Large. XL is good for me.Should have listened to my own experience rather than be entirely awayed by other customers' reviews. My experience of budget and economy brands, which source their garments from Asia, has been 1 to 2 size smaller than expected. (Am comparing to mountaineering and more expensive brands listed below). Part of my duties to client companies is to advise them of PPE & Clothing (performance with repsect to price). Budget brands are the typical ones which you see so many construction workers wearing of the "High-Viz" clothing. I call Regatta Group (Regatta, Craghoppers, Dare2B) as economy, and design performance a bit above the budget. I call ME (Mountain Equipment) as a true mountaineering brand and has been since about 1960's I think. I cam upon them when preparing for expedition to Norway in the late 70's and has been a fan ever since. I also have Mountane, Berghaus etc. Together with e.g. North Face, these brands have products from Peter Storm (Millets) to up to near ME quality.Being and economy brand I should have ordered XL instead was swayed by other reviews to order a Large. Yes the body of the garment is snug but fits on the body (if you are after a trim looking coat). However, the sleeves were far too tight. I could not wear HH Lifa Merino + a Regatta mid weight fleece underneath. My conclusion was the body size was half a size bigger than typical made in Asia garments but the sleeves were just as small in circumference (but length was ok). Thus had to order the XL which fitted nicely. If you are going to wear anyting more than a shirt then suggest you get next size up if you want to bend your arms.As for "breathable" I would say "forget it". My experience is that even Goretex, however many layers and which ever generation since my first one in 1979, they all make me sweat too much. As a cadet in the 70's I started with a RAF Cold Weather Flying jacket made of ventile. Then a Ventile & Poplin jacket during my student years along side the first Goretex single layer (Berghaus). Graduated as land surveyor and used US Army M65 with cold weather lining in the winter.. As I climed the career path was able to spend £300+ Goretex. These were fine for standing next to theodolite all day but no good for my outdoor pursuits. Just walking made me sweat.10 years ago stopped all the Goretex entirely and went back to double layer Ventile for outdoor activities (Westwinds Tempest (3 layers on the shoulders) but sadly ceased production). During intermediate weather used Govt. Surplus SAS smocks (single layer Garberdine 100% cotton). When doing wet work , e.g using the jet wash, then I resort to using a Royal Navy Sempatax (Goretex like) jacket. So that's size and waterproofness reviewed. Next; insulation. I always recommend synthetic insulation to companies because most of us want easy care. Also many workers work and live in construciton camps or offshore on vessels where laundry is taken care of by the housekeeping team. All clothing including PPE clothing will have to be machine wahed and dried. Natural down would need much more careful hand washing and drying needs some kind of bouncing ball in the dryer to deal with the clumping of the wet down. Anyway this Yewbank doesn't claim to use Hollofil type of insulation but it is warm enough for an economy coat.Next, design features. I always look for these on an outer garment and these days they are rare on a sub-£100 coat due to manufacturers more concerned with cost savings rather than looking out for what the user would need. !st there is storm flap. I suggest you look at Varusteleka.com Sarma Windproof Smock ( which is a copy of the British Army SAS smock. It has large buttons which you can use easily with cold fingers or with gloves. Being buttons, you can also make repairs in the field without too much trouble. The Yewbank has pop studs instead which is not as good but not bad compared with Velcro. I dislike Velcro because it catches your fleece or woolly pully. Soon as you want to undo one or two tabs of Velcro when walking the hills for ventilation, the flap gets caught by the opposing tab of Velcro so gets closed ! So that's the other vbenefit of the storm flap is to allow you to undo the zip but have control of ventilation. You will find this is very important when you need to continue to walk or work during heavy rain.2 Way main zip. In the absence of a storm flap this is essential. If you get in and out of vehicles a lot, if you bend and squat in your job while wearing it then it is the best way to prevent the zip busting. It also allows you a degree of ventilation control but not as good as the multiple buttons on a storm flap. Also unless the zip is a waterproof zip (rare, expensive and not in common use) then the storm flap keeps out the inclement weather more effectively.Pockets, plenty of them for gloves, safety eye wear etc. The inner pocket is large enough for my 6+ inch Samsung Note *'s. They have cover and / or zip to stop keys or coins falling out.Hood. Good to have if you don't have a hat to use in bad weather.Over the years I have bought with own cash dozens of coats and jackets and have helped client companies in choosing the right PPE & Clothing for their workers to use. For sizing & insulation I have recent (garments purchased in the last 10 years) purchases to compare :-ME Annapurna (natural down), Citadel, Fitzroy, and Compressor (all 2014 or before), all Large.Montane Flux (2 of) both XL. These and M.E's are £100 to £400 price points.Lots and lots of Craghoppers, e.g. Compresso Lite, Venta Lite etc. all XL (Sub £100 price point.Royal Naby Sempatex waterproof; SAS Windproof Smock all either 170/104 or 180/104. (M.O.D. sizing gives height (or length) then chest. 104 (cm) for chest. For WindproofBerghaus Sanya (Large) and Mountain Equipment Vulcan (XL). These use Goretex Windstopper and Goretex Ignium layerFor breathability and waterproofness I am comparing to these :-Country Innovations Axbridge (Ceased production. Single layer Ventile with ? polycotton lining). This garment is Large but is a size too large for me.Westwinds Tempest (ceased production. Double layer Ventile, tripple at the shoulders)). This jacket is my all time favourite and is size Medium and fits perfectly. Similar to Country Innovations Rover II and Hilltrek Glencoe. These multilayers are now at the £400 price point. If you are contemplating this Yewbank then just buy it. Vesion 2 of this garment has done away with the storm flap. (See above and my disdain of cost cutting by manufacturers).

Reasonable product and good value
Good storm resistant jacket. Fits well and keeps you warm, dry and comfortable. The only small issue I have, is with the light hood zip and 3 pocket zips, which could be more robust and feel they could easily "warp" if your a bit rough with them, but still, all things considered, I'm pleased with my purchase.

Only buy if your after a good winter jacket
So I was surprised how good this jacket is the way it's been made quality and how warm it keeps you at a very reasonable price . If you buy it you won't be dissatisfied. I'm 5'11 and well built so I got the XXL so that should give you a hint on what size you might need to get depending on height hope it helps . Nick North London.

Great value, excellent coat
Very warm, cosy winter coat with the added bonus of being waterproof. Unlike a lot of coats these days it is not a tight fit so room for other layers underneath, if you need them! Under £60, great value + free returns - I wont be returning mine.
