Wonderful book for the New York Fan
I'm not a sports fan but I do love New York history. Hefty, entertaining, enlightening book with lots of vintage photos. Highly recommend!

Great read, but be aware - the print is very small.

Thrilling Read
If you're a New Yorker, a former New Yorker, or just a fan of the city who never tires of learning new tidbits about it, then you'll love this book. A dense and action packed read full of history, facts, and allegories that you won't find elsewhere. You'll start to feel like you're in the announcers booth you always dreamed about - talking stats, sure, but also taking the joy of baseball beyond the field and out into the streets of the greatest city in the world and back again.

Pulitzer Prize quality writing
It is hard to put this book down. Intertwining the history of baseball with that of New York City, Baker writes with verve and consummate skill. One of the best books on either history or baseball that I've ever read.

Very good history of baseball and its relationship to the city of New York.
Starts out a little slow reading but the facts about baseball are very interesting and how hard it was for the players and ownership in the beginning

Baseball as Urban Studies
Better than you would think, is this book is a baseball book or a sociological urban history? Both, clearly, and excellent in each.
