A Place to Call Home - Series 5

Did not know anything about the series , but am glad I was not deterred by the somewhat cheese-y title of the series : ended up watching the whole set of the series - absolutely top- notch scripting, acting, complex storylines and character development ! Don’t miss this !

I loved this series, I realise it is far fetched and sentimental but I got completely drawn into the family and their dramas. Having lived in Australia, I loved the wonderful scenery and the photography is great.The actors are all excellent and the costumes and the sets and the generally the successful creation of a period of rapid change, is perceptively done. the writer’s purpose seems to be to examine all the social change that took place in Australia in the 50s, at a time when ties with the Uk were demising and ties with the US growing. It was also the era when social attitudes began to change, on racism, homosexuality, roles for women and a advent of multiculturalism. All this is followed through a cast of very sympathetic characters and not watching another episode at 2 a.m. is very hard to resist.

A place to call home is a brilliant series

Please refer to my earlier review for series 4 with this title in which I say the drama has very intense, complex, challenging, interesting storylines. I cautioned first 3 series contain flashbacks of Sarah’s sexual abuse in a concentration camp. I need to add there are also some flashbacks of Jack’s experience in a concentration camp. These scenes will bring up thoughts of past abuse in sexual abuse survivors & abuse survivors, as I referred to in my earlier review. So be prepared to take care of yourself. That being said, I highly recommend all 6 series. I too pay for Amazon Prime. After the first few free series I didnt begrudge paying £15.99 & £16.99 for later series, tho expensive, as it was worth it. The entire drama is high value. Instant download from Amazon. This brilliant, gripping drama is superior to Downton Abbey & The Crown. Never seen better. Agree the writer is a genius. Agree a beautiful depiction of humanity & its frailties. Will be re-watching it again and again
