Why are there 2 extra queens?

Hello, thanks for your question. According to the pawn promotion rule, when a player's pawn reaches the bottom line (the 8th horizontal line for White and the 1st horizontal line for Black) by moving straight in or eating diagonally, it can become one of the queen, rook, knight or bishop, but not the king (because a country cannot have two kings). A pawn's promotion is mandatory, and a pawn cannot remain a pawn until it reaches the bottom line. Once a pawn is promoted, it immediately takes on the function of a new piece. Thus, a side can have two or more queens, or 3 or more rooks, knights or bishops. In most cases, pawns are promoted to queens on the bottom line, because queens are the most powerful.
