Absolutely stunning!
In my review of [book: Bloodwitch], I said that I was disappointed in Safiya and Iseult's narratives and that it felt as if they had become love interests in their own series as well as expressing concern that they hadn't undergone any major character growth since [book: Truthwitch]. Witchshadow came to rectify that with a vengeance.Iseult's character arc within this book is one of the most satisfying fantasy woman's arc I've read in a very, very long time. Skillfully weaving together three books worth of insecurities, miscommunications, and trauma Dennard allows Iseult to dip into something darker and commit some genuinely atrocious mistakes. Confronting Corlant, Gretchya, Alma, Aeduan, Owl, Leopold, and Safiya in equal measure, centering Iseult brings threads from all three main novels together and to stunning resolution.Similarly, finally bringing Safiya home to face the consequences to Eron's plotting in Truthwitch, and giving her the opportunity to explore the realities of her childhood, brings Safiya full circle with promises she made herself aboard the Jana. It is beyond satisfying to see her finally, finally, finally begin doing things her way. It is a wonderful return home to the Cahr Awen-centric feel of Truthwitch without losing the wonderful complexities of the later books.Among the other characters, Leopold is a surprising bright spot! He is, as always, unexpected and delightful (I am particularly fond of watching his relationships to Safiya and Iseult morph and change). Stix and Ryber's deep dive into Paladin history satisfies a lot of the confusion about who and what the paladins actually are but lacks some connection and character. In my opinion, the weakest point of this story is Vivia and Vaness, but "Well/Goddess-Chosen Queens/Emperors/etc" is not a plot I will ever be fully behind and the relationship is still excellent. As a long-time fan of the way in which the Witchlands series structure is inextricable from the myths and legends of the Witchlands, a return to Iseult's story telling is an absolute pleasure. I am not usually a huge fan of flash backs, but I think Dennard uses them well and to great effect. The complexity of the novels and world building somehow continue to expand, and as a reader with a deep love for big, deep worlds I am in heaven. It is, in all, an excellent novel and well worth the wait.

Not my favorite of the series, but still good
This story feels significantly darker than the others. For the majority of the story there was no hope, no light and so much despair. It was a lot heavier than I was expecting. But I did still enjoy it, I liked the way the story moved and I’m excited for the next one.

WHAT AN EMOTIONAL AND THRILLING RIDE!!!
I loved Truthwitch when it first came out. Then I read Windwitch and my love for the Witchlands was born. Every time a new Witchlands novel comes out, I devour it, then because i loved it so much, I reread the whole series from the beginning. Witchshadow is by far the best in the series and I cannot wait for more.Iseult's constant struggle with herself, her magic, who she is, and what she stands for has been such an exhilarating journey. I loved watching her start from such a dark place, to stepping into her powers with absolute surety of what she stands for. And dear Safi, we watch her go through some things which I will not give away. All in all, both girls journey into their past hurts and regrets and true to their determination, they walk through and finally begin to deal with those things. What I loved about Witchshadow is that we finally start to get some answers for the questions we started asking since book 1. The Paladins and who they are become more clear and the reveals were just perfect! Especially the end. I cannot wait to see where Susan takes us next.We get so much more insight into each of the characters, especially Vivia and Vaness. I absolutely adore these pairs of Queens and where they are headed. I was all smiles throughout their POVs.If any of you loved Bloodwitch, you will love Witchshadow even more. This book is really about family, friendship, love, loss, loneliness, and coming to terms with ourselves. Susan, you did an absolute fantastic job on this book and I applaud you and your determination to make this book as wonderful as it turned out to be.If you have not read this series, please pick it up today. I promise you won't be disappointed!

the best book in The Witchlands BY FAR
Susan Dennard has done it again! WITCHSHADOW is a tightly paced adventure, full of reveals that have been hinted at since the first book, TRUTHWITCH. Will this book hit you in the emotional jugular? Absolutely. Will you welcome the punches with open arms? Absolutely. After all, would you expect anything less from Iseult's book?I've been looking forward to Iseult's book since I started reading the series in 2017. I've always related to her the most, and ever since finishing BLOODWITCH, I kept theorizing as to what her arc would look like. In all honesty, it's better than I could've imagined. At the heart of the story is a young woman who doubts herself, even though she possesses great power. Her rich inner life has always spoken to me, and I couldn't wait to see her grow into her power.Without spoiling the story too much, I think my favorite scene was seeing Iseult finally showing her true strength, both physically and mentally. Really, her entire arc, especially with Gretchya, was fantastic. It shows that heroines can be quiet and introverted without downplaying their strength. Susan has done a great job at creating two equally powerful heroines, despite their polar opposite personalities. In the end, WITCHSHADOW clearly sets up the stakes for the final battle in the next book. And while I adored every POV, (especially the Rook King's!) I can't wait to see all these characters interact again. Susan is so good at creating her characters' distinctive voices that I know that these interactions will be *chef's kiss* perfection.tl;dr WITCHSHADOW is a masterpiece, the best entry in The Witchlands series thus far. I cannot wait to see how it all plays out in the next (and last) book!

Another brilliant addition to the series
It is very safe to say this book absolutely slayed all expectations I had of it going in, & honestly I had pretty high expectations based on how enthralled I’ve been by every book in this series so far. Susan has a way with words that often speaks to my very core, & it was painful to finish this book & not know when the next one will come out. So many revelations in this book, so many ‘Holy Shirtballs!’ Moments that left me feeling winded & even more invested in the story than I ever was before. Honestly this may be my favourite world building of any book I’ve ever read, it’s absolutely exceptional. How the past has been woven into the present and vice versa was so seamlessly done it didn’t draw me out of the story once. I missed Merrik & Aedans POVs in this book, but I continued to love the POVs of our other MCs, & understood why Susan did what she did with each of the characters personal journeys, even if oftentimes it broke my heart & made me want to rage. Honestly waiting for the next book may be the most painful wait for a book I’ve personally experienced, especially after everything you learn in the last few chapters lol! All I can say is Bravo Susan, Bravo

Ugh my soul
How can so many questions be answered and yet soooo many remain? Just when you think you’ve pieced it all together, the plot thickens into a deeper soul wrenching and heart aching bundle of threads! The Cahr Awen are two sides to one coin. Dark and light. Initiate. Complete. So we find our girls wrapped deeper in plots, intrigue and a very messy Loom. Can they detangle the threads or will their messing with everyone’s plans just tighten the knots?I guess we will find out!
