an anime icon
i bought the robotech box two weeks ago and watched it on this weekend.when i first saw macross in 1986 or 87 on tv i was fascinated and i think, i did not miss one part of it.for me it was the start for a deep love to japanese animation and manga.i do not want to comment the plot of the series. You will find it on many homepages.when i started the first dvd i was irritated by the scetch like drawings but the quality improved a little with time and after a while watching i found it charming.I could nor remember this aspect but my view on the drawings has apparently changed over the years.so do not compare it with some modern films like evangelion or darker than black.macross really is an icon and this nice box contains the best of all macross seasons.if you have seen these dvds you suddenly know how many other films are just imitations or variations.

Brilliant! Even better than I remember it!
If you grew up watching Robotech, and the adventures of Lisa, Rick Hunter and Minmei then this is the box set for you. Or if you have never watched Robotech then this is a good way to start as it tells the first, and most interesting, part of the Robotech saga. All of the original 36 episodes have been remastered so it actually looks better than the original TV series. The sound is sometimes a little bit up and down, but on the whole the 5.1 works really well. There are minimal extras with this set, but the 6 DVDs will keep you entertained for quite a while, or if you are like me, exactly the amount of time it takes to watch 36 episodes back to back.

Still great!!!
I wasn't sure when I got this. I was concerned that I'd be ruining a childhood memory... I mean... could it really be as good as I remember it being?Oh yes. It is still a fantastic story with great characters. If you've watched this as a child you will fall in love with it all over again. And if you're new to it, you are in for a treat!

Old but fun anime
I first heard about Robotech before I had ever heard of anime and is a series that I have always been interested in seeing despite some of the bad things I have heard about it. This first Robotech series follows Rick Hunter and the crew of the SDF-1 as they are drawn into a war with an advanced alien race. This is the first mecha anime series that I have watched and despite its faults I would definitely look into this genre of anime some more. The series itself does suffer from many of the problems of westernised anime of this period such as a mediocre vocal cast, an over reliance on stock footage, a terribly annoying narration and changes made from the original Japanese series (Super Dimension Fortress Macross) that alienates many anime purists. The animation is good, if not great, for the age of the series although as this is the first I have watched of the series I do not know how much of that is due to the remastering that this boxset has undergone. Personally I greatly enjoyed much of the series and although the quality does dip somewhat in the final third, I feet that the story was well written and greatly engaging. Overall I feel that when taken on its own merits Robotech: The Macross Saga is definitely worth watching despite its faults.

An anime space opeara from the 80s.
The 80's brought us Robotech. Hand drawn/painted anime at it's 80s best wrapped up in one box called The Protoculture Collection. It looks a bit dated in comparison to todays digital stuff, but it's every bit as good as I remember it when I was 11. The dialogue can get a bit campy, but the story telling and the characters still sell it. All three stories in one collection and an additional 7 discs of bonus materials (a lot of comic book covers). I thought this set, with 21 discs, would have all three movies, but there is only one; The Sentinels. The Shadow Chronicles and Love Live Alive are part of the 20 disc "Robotech: The Complete Set." It is what it is, and doesn't really make that big difference as this is a great set, and I was pleased to find it at a reasonable price.Macross Saga, The Masters, New Generation and the Bonus Features are all in their own specific cases with one disc per page, as it were, with the four cases fitting neatly into a relatively sturdy cardboard liner. A little bulky, but it's all together, so it works. As a side note, the "remastering" process has left some very pixelated/grainy bits scattered throughout. It's most noticeable in the opening and closing credits, as that is where a lot of the changes were made. It doesn't really have that great of an impact, but it is noticeable, and can be a little distracting.

Great nostalgia for 35 year old people previously ahead of the curve
So, I'm not going to rehash what other people have said. If you're here, it's because you're a robotech fan, or know someone who raved about it. The reason this is art worth collecting in a decent edition is that the robotech story that was created to bridge these cartoons was actually greater than the sum of it's parts. I've watched mospeada, macross, etc by themselves, and although they are amazing works of art in their own right, it was the story that Carl Macek and co came up with that is the reason I have such great nostalgic feelings towards this old school anime. The books by Jack McKinney helped to really nail it home. Now, there are some problems with revisiting Robotech. 25 years hasn't been kind to this series. Some really great advances in anime in the intervening time make watching this for new people, and even for those of us that it was our gateway to anime for, somewhat hard to watch. I suggest the time honored method of having a few drinks prior to watching this, and ignoring those first feelings about quality of production, etc, so you can suspend your disbelief and get into this amazing tale. The 2 best parts are macross and mospeda (1st and 3rd robotech wars in the Robotech parlance) in my opinion, although the 2nd part has its moments, but is quite different in style than the other two.I've tried to watch Robotech in the past on horribly transferred VHS, less than great DVD transfers and "missing bits" streaming via netflix. You know how it is, netflix and other streams are convienient, but even at the highest settings it's not the whole picture, that's why Blu Ray isn't dead. This is by far the best version you can currently get, although it isn't perfect. There are some aliasing artifacts present which are disturbing, probably from the filters they used to clean up the image. I must say tho, this is the best version I've seen on modern equipment. The detail is better, it's formatted for 16x9 which is huge compared to the streaming version, and I actually think the 5.1 mix with the "new audio effects" is an improvement on the original. Sure you can kind of tell the sounds are "new" and "wrong" but they did a really good job, and it helped with me getting into the story and forget about nit-picking the 1983 animation. So, why is it so great ? The characters. They had feelings, they were real, they made mistakes, they reacted like real people, and had the flaws and attributes of real people. That is why this series is still so beloved. Although I have mixed feelings about the people currently curating Robotech (Tommy Yune and Harmony Gold) at least you can say they helped this release get made, They have good intentions and are running a business. What robotech REALLY needs, is a modern reboot, with the US storyline, and redraw the whole thing with some improvements and twists in 2012 era animation. NOT in 3D, which usually sucks and/or is jarring. (see Shadow Chronicles for why.) Of course, for legal and financial reasons, that is unlikely ever to happen in our lifetime.Anyway, This is the edition you should pick up if you want to own it but don't have it. It's better than any other version when upscaled by a progressive scan blu ray player.

Essentieller klassischer Anime

One of the greatest series ever
The dialogue is cheesy and dated since the translations are from the 80s, but for the fans it doesn't matter, it is still one of the greatest animes ever. It might be hard for new age anime fans to get into, but I grew up with this, and while GI Joe and Transformers had had bad stories and no death, this show introduced me to an animated series with an ongoing storyline and characters that were well developed and people who die. It was the basis for all my interest in anime and even though I have grown out of anime since, this is still one of the greatest series ever to me.This box set contains all 3 seasons and 7 disks of bonus materials including the never completed first few episodes of the Sentinels. Worth every penny.
