Cleopatra (1934) [Blu-ray]

Cecil B Demille was a great director
While many of Cecil B Demille's movies are a bit theatrical, they're all very well done. When you take into account what year his movies were done. Think about he had no computer generated special effects. Very entertaining and well worth watching.

Beyond Compare!!
This movie is a hundred times better than the Liz Taylor 3+ hour extravaganza (don't waste your time on it). I highly recommend this 1934 Claudette Cobert film.

Historic sexuality and violence from Hollywood yesteryear
Historic sexuality and violence was displayed upon the masses more than 86-years ago. Film buffs and Claudette Colbert fans will want this Blue-Ray flick in their collection of vintage favorites. The picture and sound clarity is marvelously restored in this remastered classic of 1934s “Cleopatra.”The bonus features were nothing to jump up and down about, but “Claudette Colbert: Queen of the Silver Screen,” had some enlightening details about the censorship in Hollywood during the antiquated era of movie making. I also learned three fascinating facts about Colbert as a movie actress from watching this bonus feature. This bonus feature also included a scantly clad photo of Colbert in a publicity photo from “Cleopatra.”The movie itself was nothing spectacular for myself, but I did like the movies depiction of Julius Caesar as a greedy tyrant, and his murder was justice served in my opinion, and Colbert’s version of “Cleopatra” satisfied my knowledge of the mass murdering Julius Caesar.A much appreciated classic for my Hollywood achieve collection.

Great Movie
For a period piece, this is an exceptional production and needs to be in most people's libraries

Classic
Grew up watching this movie and looked for it everywhere. A classic movie that is so decadent in its sets and costumes.

Cecil B. DeMille Movies - An Epic Experience
What can I say, When it came to entertainment value, all his movies had more. When I was growing up, long ago, they were special. In retrospect, they still are.

The Glory that was Hollywood
De Mille's Cleopatra is much more fun than you'd expect, played as much for deliberately camp comedy as for spectacle and a lot pacier at 104 minutes than the Elizabeth Taylor version. Warren William plays Caesar as De Mille himself, Henry Wilcoxen plays Anthony as an oaf and Claudette Colbert takes centerstage as the kind of vixen who knows which side of the Roman Empire her bread is buttered. At times De Mille's tongue is firmly in his cheek - not least a wonderfully drawn out death scene from Leonard Mudie that wouldn't look out of place in Carry On Cleo or Cleo's spectacular seduction of Tony on that fabled barge - but there's some fine filmmaking here too, not least a great battle montage padded out with footage from the silent Ten Commandments and a fine bit of censor baiting as a foreground hand ostensibly playing the harp seems to almost paw at Colbert's body. It ain't history but it is fun. Nice score from Rudolph Kopp too. It's worth seeking out the special edition release which, while not overloaded with extra features, does offer a bit more than other editions: audio commentary by F.X. Feeney, featurettes Claudette Colbert - Queen of the Silver Screen, Cecil B. de Mille - Hollywood's Epic Director and Forbidden Film - The Production Code Era (the latter also available on Pre-Code Hollywood Collection (The Cheat / Merrily We Go to Hell / Hot Saturday / Torch Singer / Murder at the Vanities / Search for Beauty) (Universal Backlot Series)), reissue trailer introduced with typical flamboyance by De Mille, and three artcards.

Any fans of epics must watch this
Yet again Cecil B. Demille produces an epic. Probably the best movie version of this subject. Intensely watchable with a superb performance from Claudette Colbert, who of course as Cleopatra carries the film. The DVD also has some fascinating extras about the making of the film and they really knew how to make them in the 30'sNo CGI - all real extras and real sets .

Quality never is old
When this movie first came out Claudette Colbert was one of the bigest names in pictures .She could act and looked realy hot wile doing it.This movie has her at her best in some very gaudy costumes and lavish sets being aCecil B DeMille epic this is to be expected. He went all out all the time.I had seen bits of this movie on clasic movie documentries in the past. I have enjoyed watching it over and over on the DVD.

DeMille & Colbert
Elizabeth Taylor is maybe the best Cleopatra, but don't wash out Vivien Leigh and... Claudette Colbert. I love het for all times. And this in combination with a great director and a handsome Antonius... I'm satisfied.

Good for it's time.
The movie looks really great and is generally well acted. Cleopatra is as strong as ever. The DVD itself has some interesting extras. The commentary and featuretes are nice. My main complaint is that the movie is incredibly rushed. I don't expect any movie to tell everything about this story, but they could've taken a bit more time with it. Also I found it odd that the person playing Octavian seems to be older than Marc Anthony even though he was considerably younger. Overall though its well done for its time and an interesting take on the story.
